Accountability Objective
Under the direction of the Health and Wellness Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse performs nursing interventions with residents within their scope of practice, utilizes the principal functions of nursing services in licensed care, follows the professional standards of practice of the applicable provincial College of Nurses, and assists with the implementation of current provincial Ministry and company policy and procedure.
Background/Qualifications
- Recognized nursing license (RPN) in positive standing.
- Written and verbal fluency in English.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Registered Practical Nurse.
- Experience working within a union setting.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and computer skills (Word, Excel, MDS/RAI).
- Resident‑oriented, aligned with Diversicare values and vision.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) program.
- Distribute medications according to resident medication times.
- Perform treatments for residents in the assigned area and assess changes in condition (e.g., falls, wounds).
- Update resident care plans based on changing needs; complete all medication, treatment, and incidental charting.
- Facilitate communication among nursing staff regarding care and concerns that arise during shifts.
- Initiate referrals to interdisciplinary team members (physician, nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, dietician, etc.).
- Collaborate with departments to ensure optimal care, such as coordinating dining experiences with dietary staff.
- Allocate and maintain adequate nursing supplies and equipment; notify the Registered Nurse or Director of Care when new supplies are needed.
- Provide direction to front‑line nursing staff to ensure use of equipment and supplies follows policies, procedures, manufacturer instructions, and health and safety regulations.
- Supervise and investigate staff actions or concerns, and address recurring issues with appropriate leadership.
- Mentor front‑line healthcare staff and provide assistance as required (e.g., transfers, lifts).
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, recognising health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, and participating in in‑services and fire drills.
- Lead infection prevention and control and outbreak management efforts; enforce compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
- Manage non‑compliant individuals and situations.
- Complete all required mandatory training and education.
- Analyse data (e.g., incident reports) and develop action plans with other departments (dining services, life enrichment, etc.).
- Perform other related tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
