Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse (RN/RPN) – Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, Sechelt Hospital

Salary: CAD $41.42 – $55.91 per hour.

Responsibilities

- Provide individualized, direct nursing care to clients with severe and persistent mental illness, concurrent disorders, and/or dementia.
- Conduct physical and psychosocial rehabilitation assessments and develop strength‑based treatment plans.
- Administer prescribed medicines, monitor client responses, and educate clients and families about medications and daily living activities.
- Maintain accurate and timely client records in accordance with unit and organizational standards.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and families to discharge plan and case coordination.
- Participate in team meetings, quality‑improvement activities, and ongoing professional development.

Education & Experience

- Current registration as a Registered Nurse or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Completion of at least 6 weeks (240 hours) of mental‑health clinical practicum or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Knowledge of concurrent disorders, substance use, harm‑reduction strategies, and related assessment and intervention methods.
- Understanding of psychiatric care models such as person and family‑centered care, trauma‑informed care, recovery models, and psychosocial rehabilitation.




- Familiarity with the Mental Health Act and its implications for client and staff rights and obligations.
- Awareness of community, social, and mental‑health resources and their impact on outcomes.
- Ability to provide nursing assessments and interventions, including group facilitation, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, counseling, and care planning.
- Skill in documenting care on appropriate systems and formatively managing complex situations with non‑violent crisis intervention techniques.
- Competence in mentoring current staff and students and performing autonomous practice within the scope of mental‑health nursing.

Work Hours

Hours and days off may vary in accordance with operational requirements, the collective agreement, and applicable statutes.
