Position Overview

Under direct supervision and in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs), the Lab Animal Technician provides primary health care and husbandry to a variety of research animal species. The Lab Animal Technician also assists with or performs technical procedures to maintain lab animal health and provide technical service to animal users in support of approved animal study protocols. The position is ideal for a person with a Veterinary Technician diploma. The incumbent must have the ability to pay attention to detail, follow SOPs and/or study protocols and possess keen observation skills. The incumbent must work in a team setting and interact with diverse client groups including faculty, graduate students, fellows and commercial clients. Previous GLP experience is desirable. The position requires working weekends, evenings and holidays as needed. This position applies to health and welfare of animals within the animal colony, general technical duties and the provision of anesthesia/surgical procedures, in support of the R.O. Burrell Lab goals.

Responsibilities

- Provide primary health care and humane care to various research animal species.
- Assist with or perform technical procedures to maintain animal health and welfare; provide technical service to animal users in support of approved study protocols.
- Follow SOPs and study protocols; accurately document activities and observations.
- Collaborate with faculty, graduate students, fellows and clients; work effectively within a team.
- Support anesthesia/surgical procedures as required.

Experience

- Previous GLP experience is desirable.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

- B.Sc. degree or Veterinary Technician diploma.

Certification/Licensure/Registration





- CALAS certification as a RLAT.

Qualifications And Skills

- Ability to determine health status of many different species of research animals and apply appropriate restraint and drug administration techniques for each species.
- Ability to perform technical procedures and anesthesia on many different species of research animals.
- Knowledge of CCAC and University requirements pertaining to animal husbandry and welfare.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer hardware systems and software applications.
- Ability to be on feet for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Hard-working, enthusiastic with a positive attitude; commitment to high standards of animal health and welfare.
