Job DescriptionPersician Assistant (PA) / Clinical Assistant (Cl.A)Surgery Services | Full-Time (1.0 EFT)Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC), Winkler, ManitobaSouthern Health-Santé Sud is seeking a committed, team-oriented, and patient-focused Physician Assistant (PA) or Clinical Assistant (Cl.A) to join the Surgery team at Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC) in Winkler, Manitoba.Position OverviewWorking under the supervision of General Surgeons, Orthopedic Surgeons and Obstetricians/Gynecologists, the PA/Cl.A functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing comprehensive inpatient, perioperative, and outpatient clinical support. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing the quality, continuity, and efficiency of surgical care while supporting positive patient outcomes across the continuum of care.Pre-Operative ResponsibilitiesAssist Family Practice Anesthetists with regional anesthesia procedures, including:Preparation and setup for nerve blocks and other regional anesthetic techniques; Monitoring and supporting patients following regional anesthesia and prior to transfer to the Operating Room.Collaborate with nursing staff and surgical team members to improve the flow and efficiency of Same Day Surgery services.Assist with the preparation and organization of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.Provide surgical assistance during minor procedures, as assigned and within scope of practice.Operative ResponsibilitiesProvide first or second surgical assistance during operative procedures, including urgent and emergent surgeries, as delegated by the attending surgeon.Assist in optimizing patient flow between the Operating Room, surgical unit, recovery area, and Same Day Surgery to support operational efficiency and access to care.Maintain a safe and efficient operative environment through collaboration with the surgical team.Post-Operative ResponsibilitiesParticipate in surgical inpatient rounds under the supervision of the attending surgeon and/or designated physician.Conduct post-operative patient assessments, including wound evaluations and follow-up care, as delegated.Assist with discharge planning, care coordination, patient education, and follow-up arrangements.Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation professionals, and community services to support safe and timely patient discharge.Support the implementation and ongoing development of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) principles, including:Promoting the appropriate use of as-needed (PRN) medications; Encouraging early mobilization and ambulation; Supporting the timely removal of intravenous lines, catheters, and other invasive devices; Identifying andaddressing patient-specific barriers to recovery and discharge.Collaborative PracticeThe PA/CI.A is expected to establish and maintain effective, respectful, and collaborative working relationships with:Attending physicians and consulting specialists; Hospitalists, surgeons,



and anesthetists; Nursing and allied health professionals; Support staff and itinerant consultants; Health facilityleadership and administrators; Community healthcare partners; andPatients and their families.The PA/CI.A will contribute to a patient-centred, team-based approach to care that promotes quality, safety, efficiency, and positive patient outcomes.Essential Functions And DutiesPerforms clinical and professional duties in accordance with departmental requirements and applicable practice standards.Provides safe, high-quality, patient-centred care in accordance with applicable legislation, professional standards, organizational policies, and established clinical protocols.Collaborates effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in the assessment, planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of patient care.Demonstrates flexibility in supporting service delivery across programs and departments as required.Contributes to a culture of safety by identifying, reporting, and responding to actual or potential risks involving patients, visitors, and staff.Participates in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety activities.Maintains accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation.Supports the mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Southern Health-Santé Sud.Provides or facilitates services in the patient's official language of choice (English or French) whenever possible.Participates in ongoing professional development and maintains all required licensure, certifications, competencies, and credentials.Performs other related duties as assigned and consistent with the scope and intent of the position.QualificationsEducation, Certification and RegistrationThe Successful Candidate Must:Successfully complete an approved assessment process.Hold and maintain registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) in the appropriate category of practice.Be eligible for and maintain a Medical Staff Appointment with Southern Health-Santé Sud.Maintain ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and professional standards established by the CPSM and applicable regulatory bodies.Physician Assistant (PA) RequirementsCandidates applying as a Physician Assistant must:Be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Education Program approved and acceptable to the CPSM.Be eligible for, or hold, national certification as a Physician Assistant.Meet all CPSM requirements for registration, licensure, and ongoing professional practice.Clinical Assistant (Cl.A) RequirementsCandidates applying as a Clinical Assistant must:Be a graduate of an accredited medical school,
