Our Mission Statement is: Through a culture-based approach that addresses the holistic needs of its clients, Na-Me-Res' mission is to provide temporary, transitional and permanent housing to Indigenous men experiencing homelessness in Toronto, while providing outreach and support services to the broader Indigenous Homeless population.Main FunctionReporting to the Lead Cook, the Part Time Cook is responsible for providing nutritious and well-balanced meals to residents while adhering to food and safety standards.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPrepares and cooks complete meals according to the Canadian Food Guide for residentsEnsures meals are prepared on timeMaintains the cleanliness of kitchen and dining facilities to ensure health standards are metEnsures sanitation and safety procedures are adhered toMaintains equipment used in food preparationStores food properly and safelyPrepares meals for community feasts and other activitiesSupervises residents in portioning food, set-up of dining room, and clean-up of kitchen facilitiesOther related duties as identified and requiredSkills RequiredKnowledge of dietary guidelines; respecting certain diets; and allergiesCook a variety of foods in large quantities from scratch, utilizing standardized recipesRead, write,
and understand written and oral instructionsFamiliarity with the use and care of kitchen equipment and suppliesMust be able to lift and carry food supplies for storageProficient interpersonal relations and communicative skillsAttend training related to kitchen and work environmentAble to work co-operatively in a team and independentlyPosition requires heavy lifting; storing boxes and moving large containersAble to work on short notice and on weekendsA willingness to learn and follow directionEducation and ExperienceCompletion of a program in cooking and several years of commercial cooking experience requiredDemonstrated experience with large meal planning and large quantity cookingCriminal record check, current up to date Food Handler's Certificate, and references requiredDesirableExperience of working in the non-profit/charitable sectorAn understanding of the issues affecting homeless peopleAbility to interact positively with homeless people from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgroundsKnowledge of Native traditions and culture is an assetNa-Me-Res encourages applications from all qualified persons.
