Director of the Leo Baeck Institute London / Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London

Starting salary from £48,376, depending on experience. (University of London salary scale Grade 8)

The Leo Baeck Institute London is seeking a new director to lead the institute in its next exciting phase of development. The post will be held in conjunction with a part time (30 percent) secondment as Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies, Birkbeck, University of London.

The Leo Baeck Institute, founded in 1955 and with branches in London, New York, Jerusalem and Berlin, is the world’s leading institution for research on the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry from the eighteenth century to the present day.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate and an excellent academic record in the field of German-Jewish studies, as well as proven administrative and managerial skills in order to work with the Institute’s small but experienced team. You will be responsible, along with a Deputy Director, for the academic work of the LBI London, including international conferences, workshops, lecture series, and collaboration with other academic institutions in London and abroad. You will lead our long-standing international doctoral Fellowship program with the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, and could also assume the role of co‑editor of our flagship publication, the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book,



the leading journal in the field of German‑Jewish Studies. You will work with LBI colleagues in London and Berlin to prepare the institute’s budget, make applications for external funding and oversee the institute’s publication series in Germany and the United States.

An excellent command of English and German is essential. Experience dealing with German government institutions and other funding bodies is desirable.

As part of an agreement with Birkbeck, University of London, you will be seconded on a 0.3 FTE basis as Lecturer to the School of Historical Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Birkbeck, contributing as appropriate to teaching programmes in history and/or other subject areas. The Faculty has significant strengths in the history of the twentieth century, public history and the study of gender and sexuality and houses the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism, directed by Professor David Feldman, and (with Queen Mary, University of London) the Raphael Samuel History Centre, directed by Dr Joseph Viscomi and Professor Nadia Valman.

The LBI expects to move in the course of 2023 from its current location on the Mile End campus of Queen Mary University London to the Bloomsbury campus of Birkbeck, University of London.
