Senior Financial Accountant
Type: In-Office | Full-Time | Minimum 1-2 months contract, possible temp to perm

Key Responsibilities
As the Senior Financial Accountant , you will be responsible for overseeing the company's accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, providing financial insight to senior leadership, and leading the day-to-day accounting function. You will serve as a trusted advisor to the President while supporting continuous improvement across the finance department.
Financial Reporting & Business Support
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements, management reports, and financial summaries for the President and leadership team.
- Analyze financial performance, identify trends, investigate variances, and provide meaningful recommendations to support strategic business decisions.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial projections.
- Monitor and report on key financial metrics including profitability, working capital, accounts receivable, inventory, and operating expenses.
- Provide financial insight that supports operational planning and overall business performance.
Full-Cycle Accounting
- Manage all aspects of the full-cycle accounting function, ensuring the integrity and reliability of the company's financial records.
- Prepare and review general ledger entries, journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, and fixed asset accounting, including depreciation and amortization.
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring financial reporting is completed accurately and within established timelines.
- Review accounting transactions for appropriate coding, supporting documentation, and compliance with company policies and Canadian accounting standards.
- Maintain accurate and complete accounting records while ensuring the ongoing integrity of financial data across all accounting functions.
Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable Leadership
- Provide leadership, guidance,
and oversight to the Accounting Clerk responsible for accounts receivable and accounts payable.
- Review customer accounts, receivable aging reports, collections activities, and credit-related matters.
- Oversee vendor payments, accounts payable processing, reconciliations, payment schedules, and expense reporting.
- Ensure timely processing of customer invoicing, vendor payments, and cash receipts.
- Monitor working capital requirements and support effective cash management initiatives.
Financial Controls & Process Improvement
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting capabilities, and overall financial operations.
- Develop and maintain accounting documentation and standard operating procedures.
- Support ongoing enhancements to accounting systems, ERP functionality, and reporting tools.
- Utilize emerging technologies, including AI-powered tools, to improve productivity, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiencies.
Tax Compliance & External Reporting
- Coordinate the preparation and submission of GST/HST, PST, payroll remittances, and other statutory filings.
- Prepare supporting schedules and working papers for external accountants.
- Assist with year-end financial statements and corporate tax preparation.
- Maintain organized financial records to support audit and compliance requirements.
Inventory & Operational Accounting
- Oversee inventory accounting, including reconciliations, costing reviews, adjustments, and inventory valuation.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
- Collaborate with operational teams to ensure financial reporting accurately reflects business activities.
- Apply knowledge of foreign exchange rates and currency fluctuations where applicable to support accurate financial reporting and transactions.
Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise, mentor, and support the Accounting Clerk.
- Review work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company procedures.
- Establish priorities, manage deadlines, and ensure all accounting activities are completed on time.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and high-quality financial reporting.
Systems & Technology
- Work within Odoo Accounting to manage daily accounting operations and financial reporting.
- Support optimization of ERP functionality and financial reporting processes.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and identify opportunities to leverage AI tools to improve workflow efficiency, reporting, and decision-making.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
Education & Experience
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CPA designation or progress toward obtaining a CPA is considered a strong asset.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a privately owned organization.
- Experience overseeing or reviewing the work of accounting support staff.
- Strong background in full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
- Experience preparing management reports, financial analysis, budgets, and forecasts.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and tax requirements.
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems; experience with Odoo Accounting is considered a strong asset.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience preparing GST/HST, PST, payroll remittances, and year-end working papers.
- Knowledge of inventory accounting, costing, and financial controls.
- Understanding of foreign exchange rates and multi-currency transactions is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools and emerging technologies to improve efficiency and support financial operations.
