VICE PRESIDENT OF CONSTRUCTION/OPERATIONSPosition OverviewThe VP of Operations/Construction is a senior executive responsible for overseeing and optimizing all operational functions of the company. Reporting directly to the company President, this position will play a critical role in day-to-day decision-making, strategic planning, and execution across all civil construction divisions.This position requires a hands‐on leader with deep understanding of civil construction operations, project delivery, financial performance, and business development. The VPO will mentor and develop project managers and operational leaders while acting as a high‐level liaison with private clients, municipalities, and government agencies.This role includes a combination of office‐based leadership and frequent on‐site presence. The VPO must be comfortable working extended hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly during peak construction seasons and critical project phases.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational LeadershipProvide executive oversight of all construction divisions, including paving, underground services, and maintenance operationsEnforce operational standards, workflows, and performance metricsSupport daily operational decision‐makingEnsure job accountability to managers, superintendents, and crew leadsPromote a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and Lean thinking across all operationsEnsure operational standards, processes, and best practices are consistently achieved across all divisions to drive efficiency, quality, and execution excellenceStrategic Planning & GrowthTranslate company vision and strategy into actionable operational plansIdentify opportunities to expand market presence and strengthen competitive positioningSupport long‐range planning related to equipment, staffing, and infrastructureContribute to business development initiatives and key client relationshipsUnderstand project and divisional profitability by monitoring costs, margins, and productivityWork closely with finance and estimating teams to establish workloads, labor needs,
and equipment utilizationField Operations OversightMaintain an active presence in the field through regular job‐site visits and inspectionsReview project progress, schedule adherence, safety practices, and workmanshipSupport superintendents and field teams by addressing logistical or operational issuesEnsure field execution aligns with company standards and client expectationsAct as a senior liaison with municipalities, developers, and industry partnersDeliver elevated client care and maintain strong, long‐term relationships with clients, consultants, and key stakeholdersPlanning, Scheduling & ControlsOversee project scheduling processes and ensure alignment with contractual milestonesChair key project meetings, ensuring agendas, minutes, and follow‐up actions are executedEnsure consistent tracking and reporting of project progress, risks, and performanceAssist with bidding process, estimating, and risk assessmentParticipate in contract negotiations and job‐start planningEnsure smooth handoffs from estimating to operations and field teamsPartner with estimating and business development teams to pursue and secure new workSupport bid strategy, risk analysis, and contract negotiationsStrengthen market presence by maintaining relationships within the construction and engineering communitySafety, Compliance & Risk ManagementEnforce strict HSE standards across all operations as it relates to company policiesPromote a strong safety culture through leadership, accountability, and continuous improvementMitigate operational and contractual risks through proactive planning and oversightRecruit, onboard, support and develop project managers, superintendents, and operational personnelFoster a culture of collaborative, accountability, teamwork,
and continuous improvement to create a high‐performance work environmentAddress performance challenges promptly and constructivelyEquipment & Asset ManagementAssist and manage capital expenditure planningOptimize equipment allocation and utilization across projectsEnsure preventive maintenance programs are followed to reduce downtimeBalance operational needs with long‐term asset planningQualifications & RequirementsBachelor's degree or diploma inrelevant construction discipline and/or Operations Management,Business Administration, or a related/equivalent field10+ years leadership experience in thecivil construction industry, preferably in a senior operational roleExcellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to influence at all levelsAbility to make informed decisions in complex, ambiguous, and high‐risk environmentsProactive approach to conflict prevention and resolution across projects and teams; Solid risk identification, assessment, and mitigation capabilitiesDemonstrated success leading and improving complex construction operationsSolid understanding of supply chain management, procurement, logistics, and equipment-intensive operationsFamiliarity with relevant construction regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirementsProven ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and operate under tight deadlinesBREYCON Construction is a growing, Edmonton‐based full‐scope civil general contractor specializing in asphalt paving.
