Based out of Burnaby, other areas in the Lower Mainland or BC Interior, Calgary, or Edmonton, you’ll join the Aquatics Team and contribute to baseline environmental planning, permitting, and construction efforts for government and privately owned infrastructure projects throughout Western Canada. The Intermediate Aquatics Biologist will lead and mentor field crews for surveys supporting all project phases from permitting to post-construction monitoring.

This position will start immediately with an anticipated 80% travel for fieldwork and 20% office work. A successful offer may be full-time or a 12-month contract, with potential extension or conversion to full-time depending on workload and skillset. Safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided by Jacobs.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead and mentor field crews, conduct surveys to support all project phases (permitting, baseline assessments, construction, and post-construction monitoring), and contribute to environmental planning and permitting efforts as part of multidisciplinary project teams.

Qualifications and Requirements

What you’ll need

- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology or an environmental-related field, with emphasis on freshwater fish or aquatic studies.
- Hold or be eligible for RPBio (BC), P.Biol. (Alberta), or other designation to denote a Qualified Environment Professional in BC or AB; Biologist in Training may be considered.
- At least 5 years of experience leading aquatic-related field studies, reviewing field data, managing remote crews,



and liaising with client contacts, with emphasis on fish and fish habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, fish sampling, snorkel surveys, and fish salvage/relocation.
- At least 3 years of experience in environmental consulting related to Canadian aquatic resources and water resources permitting, or relevant comparable experience.
- Working knowledge of the Federal Fisheries Act and provincial and federal environmental legislation in western Canada.
- Willingness to work in the field in remote locations for up to 2–3 weeks at a time, including overnight stays in hotels or project camps.
- Physical ability to work safely around quick-flowing and deep-water systems.
- Driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Ideally, you’ll also have

- Experience working with diverse clients across multiple sectors.
- Experience collecting field data using mobile apps (e.g., Esri Field Maps or Survey123).
- Experience viewing/reviewing digitally collected field data in web or desktop solutions.
- Valid electro-fishing certificate approved by WorkSafeBC.
- Experience driving 4x4 trucks on remote/gravel roads, and experience with UTVs, boats, and hauling trailers.
- Interest or experience in supporting other biophysical study areas such as wetlands, rare plants, weeds, wildlife, and environmental monitoring or inspection.

Compensation and Work Arrangement

Posted Salary Range Minimum: $66,300.00

Posted Salary Range Upper: $103,575.00

The base salary range for this position is $66,300.00 to $103,575.00. Pay is determined by work location and factors such as job-related skills, experience, and education or training.
