OverviewA member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Radiology specialist provides diagnostic and consultative patient care services for CAF members. They work with Medical Radiation Technicians and can lead within CAF Health Services and mentor and educate military health care providers.ResponsibilitiesEnsure accurate, rapid radiological interpretation of multimodality imaging, including CT, ultrasound and X-ray.Help guide surgical and medical treatment at a Canadian Forces Health Services Clinic or while deployed on international, peacekeeping or humanitarian operations.Maintain a high level of clinical currency by holding a position within a civilian health care facility.Provide interventional skills for minimally invasive therapeutic treatment of injuries on overseas missions (when applicable).Contribute to development and application of health care policies within the CAF.Work EnvironmentRadiologists maintain clinical readiness by being embedded as staff in tertiary care civilian hospitals across Canada, working alongside civilian colleagues. Part of the time may be spent providing in‐house or remote radiological interpretation to support Primary Care Services at Canadian Forces Health Services Clinics. They also participate in education, training tasks, and research nationally and internationally. Radiologists belong to a Canadian Field Hospital and maintain operational readiness through annual military skills training and field exercises. Deployment may occur in unique and challenging environments as part of the Health Services team.Regular Force members will be assigned to a base after completion of training, with potential relocations. Primary Reserve members work part‐time, typically one night per week and some weekend days, with possible full‐time opportunities.Entry PlansIf you are a member of the Royal College and Surgeons of Canada and have an unrestricted licence to practise in Radiology in a Canadian province or territory,



you may be eligible for enrolment and commencement of basic training.The CAF supports clinicians who practice in the following radiology sub‐specialties:Interventional RadiologyCardiothoracic ImagingBody Imaging and InterventionMusculoskeletalNeuroradiologyEmergency and Trauma RadiologyTrainingBasic Military Officer Qualification training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint‐Jean‐sur‐Richelieu, Quebec; includes two weeks of distance learning and four weeks of in‐house training covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, first aid, and field exercises. Training is offered in English or French, and completion is a prerequisite for further training.All physicians, including Radiologists, attend the Basic Medical Officer Course (BMOC) at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario. The six‐week course covers the organisational structure of the Canadian Forces Medical Service and practising military medicine, delivered through blended modalities.Environmental training includes field exercises worldwide. Radiologists may specialise further through sub‐specialty fellowship programmes at Canadian universities or other postgraduate degrees, with subsidy for additional years of service. Advanced medical, military, or leadership training may be offered for qualified candidates.Part‐time OptionsThe Canadian Forces Health Services Reserves provide trained personnel to support operations and training activities. Primary Reserve medical specialists can work part‐time, often residing within 100 km of a CAF Health Services unit. They maintain civilian positions in tertiary hospitals and participate in annual military skills training, field exercises, and can volunteer for deployment domestically or internationally.Primary Reserve medical specialists may have opportunities to work internationally and contribute to the development and delivery of clinical teaching and training tasks.
