The Controller, Financial Operations is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations within a multi-entity insurance brokerage setting. This role ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial records, the timely completion of month-end and year-end close processes, and the effective management of core accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and broker/insurer payables where applicable.Working closely with the Director, Financial Operations and the FP&A team, the Controller supports financial reporting, enhances internal controls, and drives continuous process improvements across the accounting function. This role also plays a key part in standardizing financial processes across multiple brokerage entities, supporting system enhancements, and contributing to ERP implementation initiatives. The Controller provides day-to-day leadership within the finance team, mentoring and developing a team of Accountants while ensuring operational efficiency, accountability, and alignment with organizational objectives.This is a hybrid role with the flexibility to work in-office or in-branch based on the needs of the role and/or as required by management. Preference will be given to candidates that can work 3 days per week at our office locations in Vancouver or Courtenay as part of their hybrid work arrangement.RESPONSIBILITIES:ACCOUNTING OPERATIONS & FINANCIAL REPORTINGManage all accounting operations including A/R, A/P, and General Ledger in collaboration with the Director, Financial OperationsOversee journal entries and ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing processesManage account reconciliations and ensure appropriate accruals are maintainedEnsure accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial records and reportingMonitor and manage cash flow to meet business obligations and optimize investment opportunitiesMaintain and monitor capital expenditure activities across the organizationCreate and manage lease agreements and amortization schedules for capital assetsSupport financial planning and contribute to strategies for sustainable financial growthAUDIT, COMPLIANCE & CONTROLSCoordinate internal and external audit processes,
including preparation of required documentation and schedulesDevelop and document accounting policies, procedures, and business processes to strengthen internal controlsEnsure compliance with financial regulations, corporate policies, and best practicesAssist the Director in maintaining financial governance and regulatory adherencePROCESS IMPROVEMENT & EFFICIENCYIdentify efficiencies and opportunities for cost reductions across the businessLead continuous improvement initiatives and contribute recommendations for operational enhancementsSupport the optimization and automation of finance processes to improve accuracy and efficiencyAnalyze workflows and recommend scalable solutions to support business growth and operational effectivenessCROSS-ENTITY COLLABORATION & STANDARDIZATIONWork collaboratively with related companies and internal departments, including operations, finance, and leadership teamsAssist in standardizing finance processes across multiple brokerage entities or regionsSupport the development and implementation of consistent standard operating proceduresAct as a key finance partner to promote alignment, consistency, and best practices across entitiesTEAM LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENTManage a team of direct reports, including mentorship, coaching, and day-to-day supervisionLead goal setting and objective development to align team performance with business prioritiesSupport recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning activitiesConduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback and development supportAdditional duties and responsibilities may be added during the course of employment.Requirements:CA/CPA designation or equivalent work experience3–5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a multi-entity environmentExperience managing inter-company transactions and complex reconciliationsAdvanced Excel skills,
including data analysis and financial modelingProficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (e.G., Outlook, Word, Teams)Experience with Sage 50 Accounting and ADP Workforce NowStrong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controlsExperience supporting audits and working with external auditorsProven ability to lead process improvements, enhance efficiencies, strengthen internal controls, and identify cost reduction opportunitiesStrong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to develop creative solutions and provide financial insights to support decision-making and business strategyExcellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with senior leadership, department leaders, and cross-functional teamsAbility to manage competing priorities and perform effectively under pressure in a deadline-driven environmentSound financial and business acumen, with a focus on long-term financial sustainability and risk managementCommitment to continuous learning and staying current with accounting standards, regulations, and financial technologiesExperience mentoring, coaching, or supporting team members is considered an assetAbility to support special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as requiredNavacord is deeply committed to fostering a workplace that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion. Compensation is determined by a combination of factors including a candidate's experience, job-specific knowledge, and skills.
