About the role

Become an integral part of the Data Centers team, where your primary responsibility will be to manage both physical and cloud-based infrastructure with an emphasis on reliability and scalability. You will take charge of a global fleet of servers, spearhead automation and observability initiatives, and oversee capacity planning for physical data center requirements. This role will report directly to the Engineering Manager of Data Centers and Networking.

Location: Vancouver, Canada (with the flexibility to collaborate across various global time zones) Engagement: Full time Salary: $118,500 - $150,000 CAD base (British Columbia; this figure excludes bonuses, equity, or benefits) Team: Data Centers (part of the Infrastructure Engineering division)

What you'll do

- Conduct thorough research and comparisons of hardware options and colocation facilities, collaborating with the Engineering team to find the right balance between performance and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop and implement cloud expansion strategies across various providers and geographical regions to enhance service delivery.
- Lead capacity planning efforts and devise upgrade strategies, utilizing data analytics to predict growth and avert potential bottlenecks in infrastructure.
- Deploy servers at scale in data centers around the globe, ensuring that consistent standards and automation practices are upheld.
- Create and maintain automation processes for managing large fleets of servers, virtual machines (VMs), and containers to minimize manual intervention.
- Liaise with vendors for quotes, procurement, and scheduling of installations and maintenance tasks to ensure smooth operations.
- Establish and refine monitoring systems for server, network,



and data center health, including the development of alerts, dashboards, and service-level objective (SLO) metrics.
- Author and maintain comprehensive documentation, including runbooks, standards, and architecture diagrams, to facilitate operational efficiency.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule within the Infrastructure Engineering team, contributing to incident response efforts and conducting post-incident reviews.
- Diagnose and resolve complex systems and network issues, acting as an escalation point for team members.
- Provide mentorship to other System Administrators and engineers in areas such as Linux, automation, and operational best practices.
- Collaborate closely with the Security team on initiatives related to system hardening, compliance, and intrusion detection/prevention.

Requirements

- A solid background in Systems or Software Engineering, with a pronounced focus on infrastructure and operations.
- Extensive experience with Linux in both on-premise and cloud environments, including skills in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and large-scale automation.
- A strong understanding of networking principles, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, routing, firewalls, and load balancing.
- Practical experience in data center operations, including racking, stacking, and adhering to cabling standards, as well as remote management capabilities.




- Familiarity with cloud service platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS), along with experience in hybrid infrastructure configurations.
- A minimum of 5 years in systems administration or related roles, with experience leading cross-functional projects and mentoring team members.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with distributed teams.
- An active passport is required for occasional on-site travel when remote assistance is not available.

Nice to have

- Experience with container orchestration tools such as Kubernetes or Docker Swarm.
- Knowledge of configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Go for automation purposes.

Skills & tools

- Proficient in Linux administration and automation techniques.
- Strong understanding of networking protocols including TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or similar services.
- Competence in managing server hardware and colocation facilities.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools and alerting systems, as well as SLO-based metrics.
- Experience in managing fleets of VMs and containers.
- Knowledge of intrusion detection/prevention systems and strategies for system hardening.

- The salary range provided reflects the base pay for positions located in British Columbia, Canada, and does not include bonuses, equity or additional benefits.
- Individual compensation will be determined based on factors such as location, skills, experience and relevant educational background.
