Operating as an independent organization of UBC, the AMS advocates students' interests and provides opportunities for their growth and advancement. The AMS represents over 56,000 undergraduate and graduate students and its priorities are determined by these members. In addition to offering services to students, the AMS is an advocate of students' issues and ensures the needs of students are presented to the University administration and the provincial and federal governments. The AMS is student-led, student-focused, and always student-first.Position PurposeWe are recruiting for a Building Operations Maintenance Assistant to help support the upkeep of our state-of-the-art, 250,000 square foot facility. The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of all venues and equipment in the Student Union Building (THE NEST) in compliance with AMS standards and procedures and regulatory legislation (e.G. Food Safe Standards, WHMIS). They provide day-to-day maintenance of the facility to keep all building fabric, fittings and equipment in valuable repair. This is a great position for those who are completing their education and have some experience in handy work or alternatively those who have industry experience and are looking for a single facility operation.Duties and ResponsibilitiesSupport Maintenance Supervisor and follow directionsSupport Building Operations Duty Manager during closing of the buildingInteract with members of the public to guide them out during closingMinor repairs to furniture and equipmentMinor painting and finishingOrdering supplies as per AMS standards and proceduresMaintaining in order and safely utilizing workshop equipment,
tools and suppliesLoading and moving materials, including furniture and equipmentGeneral maintenance and handyperson duties: assembling, lifting, movingCleaning duties: sweeping, mopping, clearing beer lines, maintaining the loading dock areas and workshopOther duties as requiredQualifications and ExperienceExperience in basic drywall, painting and other repair work is an assetTrades background as a building maintenance worker, handyman, cooling technician, carpenter or similar is an assetTrade certifications are an assetRequired to speak, read and write EnglishStrong interpersonal skills and communication skillsDemonstrated positive attitude and strong work ethicPhysically fit to perform the duties of maintenance and repairs, such as the ability to lift up to 60kgs (132lbs)At the AMS, we believe that a diverse workforce enriches our organization and we value individual life experiences, knowledge and self-expression that different people bring.
