Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (Research and Teaching) Full‑time academic position (Research and Teaching focus) in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure‑track) or Associate Professor (with tenure). The anticipated start date is January 2027 or a mutually agreed date. The position can be based at the Faculty’s Calgary or Edmonton campus. Opportunity Faculty leadership or preparation for faculty leadership service is a requirement. The role involves reciprocal, respectful collaboration with community partners to identify innovative approaches to practice, create inclusive pathways and spaces for marginalized groups and Indigenous peoples, and engage in knowledge development, mobilization, and teaching that honour diverse ways of knowing. Primary Responsibilities Develop and lead long‑term, sustainable, community‑engaged, cross‑sectoral research collaborations to reduce barriers to wellbeing and thriving. Secure external research funding (grant, donor, and other sources) to support community‑led partnerships nationally and globally. Produce and disseminate high‑impact scholarly work, including publications, policy briefs, and community engagement activities. Teach BSW, MSW, and/or PhD courses, with a focus on diverse delivery models and interdisciplinary approaches. Supervise graduate students, mentor peers, and contribute to curriculum development. Provide service at the faculty, university, and professional levels, including committee work and community outreach. Demonstrate leadership in service, collaboration, and mentorship within the faculty, university, and broader community.

In exceptional circumstances a PhD or doctorate in an interdisciplinary‑related field may be considered. BSW or MSW and eligibility to register with the Alberta College of Social Workers. Evidence of high‑quality research and scholarship, including publications in peer‑reviewed journals. Evidence of securing external research funding as principal investigator. Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the university level, including curriculum development. Evidence of commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, anti‑oppression, and social justice. Experience in full‑time leadership or clinical practice (2–5 years) in one or more eligible research areas. Experience engaging Indigenous communities, knowledge keepers, and civil society leaders, and facilitating culturally protected spaces. Experience in systems transformation (child protection, domestic violence, settlement, system integration, disability services). Ability to build trust, credibility, and collaborative partnerships with community members.
Experience in grant writing and donor stewardship to diversify funding sources. Strong publication record appropriate to the career stage. Strong track record of securing ongoing external research funds as principal investigator. Demonstrated success in graduate supervision at the MSW and PhD levels. Ability to provide early research mentorship to colleagues. Rank and Appointment The candidate will be appointed at either the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure‑track) or Associate Professor (with tenure). Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor requires evidence of beginning work in research, teaching, and service. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor requires evidence of an established academic program of national recognition, sustained funding, teaching excellence, and service to the university or profession.
