Compensation and Hours
The salary range for this position is CAD $41.42/hr - $55.91/hr. The hours of work, including start and stop times, days off, work area, and work site may be subject to change consistent with operations requirements and applicable provisions of the Collective Agreement and statutes.

Unit Overview
Acute Behavioural Stabilization Unit (ABSU) is part of St. Paul's Emergency Department; it operates 24 hours a day and consists of short‑stay admissions (48‑72 hours). The unit is staffed with an interdisciplinary team of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, psychiatrists, registered psychiatric nurses, psychiatric assessment nurses, and social workers, with input from addictions consultants.
St. Paul's Hospital is an acute care, teaching, and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver, home to many world‑class medical and surgical programs including heart and lung services, HIV/AIDS, mental health, emergency, critical care, kidney care, elder care, and numerous surgical specialties.
Position
St. Paul's Hospital is currently seeking a full‑time (1.0 FTE) RN‑RPN to join our Acute Behavioural Stabilization Unit, offering a collaborative, fast‑paced workplace where your skills and compassion truly matter. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the RN‑RPN will assist complex diagnosis, surgery, and medicine cases including neurology/stroke, gastroenterology, respiratory, renal, cardiovascular, and mental health/substance use patients.
Key Responsibilities
Assesses, identifies, plans, implements, and evaluates the nursing care required to assist patients/residents in meeting their physical, social, spiritual, and psychological needs using an established framework for nursing practice.
Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises the plan of care.
Incorporates individual and/or group teaching into the care plan and nursing interventions, and/or makes referrals to other identified resources.
Supports other nurses and health care professionals by collegially sharing information and demonstrating procedures.
Reviews patient/resident status through chart review, observation, interview, questionnaires, collateral information, and consultation with peers.
Plans, implements, evaluates, and prioritizes nursing care and nursing interventions, and develops the plan of care using clinical judgement and evidence‑based practice.
Provides nursing care according to identified policies and procedures, technology and PHC standards.
Monitors patient/resident progress,
evaluates outcomes, reassesses if goals are not met, and modifies plan of care.
Records observations and reports problems or changes in patient/resident condition to designated staff.
Provides direct nursing interventions for management of crisis and life‑threatening situations.
Documents information including assessments, plan of care, patient/resident status and progress, and discharge plans in a manual and/or computerized environment.
Accompanies patients in medical transport vehicles as required by the employer.
Identifies and responds to patient/resident and family learning needs, provides educational materials, incorporates teaching activities, and/or makes referrals to other identified resources.
Leads group patient/family sessions when required and coaches patient/resident/family to develop and maintain health‑promoting behaviours.
Provides direction to other staff such as Care Attendants and Licensed Practical Nurses regarding patient/resident care and facilitates effective teamwork.
Participates in nursing orientation and shares clinical knowledge with nursing staff, students, and other team members.
Participates in and attends in‑service presentations and other educational programs as required.
Participates in planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient/resident care policies, procedures, education materials, and best practices.
Supports nursing research through identifying potential clinical nursing research projects and participating in research activities.
Facilitates discharge plans and liaises with families and community resources agencies.
Advocates for patients/residents, protecting and promoting their rights to dignity, respect, privacy, confidentiality, autonomy, and access to information.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Nurse‑to‑Patient Ratios (mNPR)
mNPR sets the minimum number of nurses required to safely care for patients on a given unit. Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses' Union (BCNU), and health organizations across British Columbia, mNPR provides a consistent and transparent approach to staffing that supports safe nursing practice and high‑quality patient care.
Education
Current practising registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, or in Residential Care and Mental Health, and current practising registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
Two years’ recent psychiatric nursing experience in a tertiary care emergency department and/or two years’ recent acute psychiatric experience in a tertiary care facility or mental health facility.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service.
