Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer at Gemtec About the role: Gemtec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Ottawa, Ontario. What you'll do Conduct geotechnical investigations and assessments for a range of projects, including commercial, residential, and infrastructure developments.
Analyze soil and rock samples to determine their physical and engineering properties, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
Prepare detailed geotechnical reports that outline findings, recommendations, and design parameters for foundation systems and earthworks.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil engineers, environmental scientists, and project managers, to deliver integrated project solutions.
Utilize advanced geotechnical software and tools to model subsurface conditions and predict performance under various loading scenarios.
Participate in fieldwork, including site investigations, drilling operations, and monitoring of construction activities to ensure adherence to geotechnical specifications.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and interns, fostering a culture of learning and professional development within the team.
Stay updated on industry trends,



emerging technologies, and best practices in geotechnical engineering to enhance service offerings and improve project outcomes.
Engage with clients to understand their needs and expectations, ensuring that project deliverables align with their objectives.
Assist in the preparation of proposals and bids for new projects, showcasing Gemtec's expertise and capabilities in geotechnical engineering.
Conduct risk assessments related to geotechnical issues, providing clients with strategies to mitigate potential challenges.
Support the development and implementation of quality control and assurance processes within the geotechnical engineering team.
Requirements A degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or eligibility for registration in Ontario is preferred.
Strong knowledge of geotechnical design principles, soil mechanics, and foundation engineering.
Proficiency in geotechnical software such as GeoStudio, PLAXIS, or similar tools for analysis and modeling.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.




Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing geotechnical engineering in Canada.
Nice to have Experience with environmental assessments and remediation projects.
Knowledge of construction methods and practices related to geotechnical engineering.
Previous involvement in project management or client relationship management.
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis and mapping.
Experience in conducting laboratory testing of soil and rock materials.
Skills & tools Geotechnical analysis and design software (e.g., GeoStudio, PLAXIS)
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
AutoCAD or similar drafting software
Field investigation tools and equipment (e.g., drilling rigs, sampling tools)
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Practical notes This position is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and may require occasional travel to project sites across the region.
The work environment is a combination of office-based tasks and fieldwork, requiring adaptability to various settings.
