Team Lead, AML (Crypto) at Wealthsimple. About the role Wealthsimple is seeking a dedicated leader to join our Anti-Money Laundering (AML) team, where you will oversee a group of analysts responsible for scrutinizing and investigating financial transactions across both traditional and cryptocurrency domains. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in identifying and addressing risks associated with money laundering and terrorist financing, while also enhancing operational workflows to keep pace with evolving patterns of financial crime. Your leadership will be crucial in fortifying digital asset financial crime controls within Canada.

What you'll do Lead and mentor a team of AML analysts, providing guidance through regular one-on-one meetings, constructive feedback, and career development discussions.
Establish clear expectations and priorities for your team, assisting analysts in managing their workloads while adapting to shifting company goals.
Oversee and validate complex or high-priority investigations to ensure adherence to internal AML policies and regulatory requirements.
Enhance operational efficiency by monitoring team performance metrics, such as case turnaround times and quality assurance scores, while identifying trends and addressing process inefficiencies.
Provide training on blockchain analytics tools, supporting analysts with escalations and resolving technical challenges as they arise.
Act as a subject matter expert in financial crime,
encompassing both fiat and cryptocurrency, by keeping abreast of new typologies, regulatory updates, and emerging risks.
Foster innovation by suggesting and testing enhancements to alerts, case management, and the overall risk strategy for both fiat and crypto transactions.
Maintain effective communication with stakeholders by delivering proactive updates, escalating issues as necessary, and ensuring resolution of problems.
Promote a culture of continuous learning by leading knowledge-sharing initiatives, supporting ongoing training efforts, and identifying development opportunities for team members.
Requirements A minimum of 4 years of experience in Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF), with at least 2 years specifically focused on crypto AML within a cryptocurrency exchange, blockchain analytics company, or fintech involved with digital assets.
At least 1-2 years of experience in a leadership capacity, with a track record of coaching or managing team members in an operational environment.
Comprehensive understanding of AML controls, typologies, and compliance frameworks, including FATF and FINTRAC regulations.
Proven experience in conducting investigations and preparing, filing, and reviewing Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs), Large Virtual Currency Transaction Reports (LVCTR), Electronic Funds Transfer Reports (EFTR), and other regulatory documentation.
Strong operational discipline, evidenced by meeting service level agreements (SLAs), managing quality assurance processes, and implementing process enhancements.
Familiarity with cryptocurrency on-chain analytics tools such as Chainalysis, TRM Labs, or Elliptic.
Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
Nice to have Relevant certifications in Chainalysis, TRM Labs, or Elliptic, or financial crime designations such as CAMS, CFE, or CFCS.
Previous experience working at a regulated cryptocurrency exchange or within a blockchain analytics organization.
