Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Health Sciences is seeking a temporary, part-time (0.1 FTE ) Assistant Instructor, Prosthetics and Orthotics. The Assistant Instructor will support the delivery of hands‑on prosthetic fabrication instruction within the Prosthetics and Orthotics program. Working under the direction of faculty and in collaboration with the program’s Registered Prosthetic Technician, the successful candidate will assist with the preparation, demonstration, supervision, and cleanup of fabrication laboratory activities. This role provides additional instructional support during high‑volume practical sessions to help ensure a protected, organized, and effective learning environment.

Students in the program fabricate prosthetic devices for use during simulated clinical experiences with volunteer participants. Through these experiences, students develop technical fabrication skills including plaster work, cast modification, vacuum‑forming and blister‑forming prosthetic sockets, trimming and finishing thermoplastic components, prosthetic assembly, alignment procedures, and related laboratory techniques. The Assistant Instructor will provide technical demonstrations, support students as they practice fabrication techniques,



assist with laboratory setup and maintenance, and contribute to the safe operation of equipment and tools.

This position is 0.1 FTE (approximately 49 hours over the 14‑week appointment period, averaging 3.5 hours per week). Workload will vary according to course scheduling and fabrication activities and will require flexibility. Scheduled work may consist of full‑day (7‑hour) or half‑day (3.5‑hour) shifts during designated laboratory sessions throughout the Fall term.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist with the setup and preparation of prosthetic fabrication laboratories.

Provide technical demonstrations and instruction related to prosthetic fabrication procedures.

Supervise and support students during laboratory activities.

Assist students with fabrication procedures while promoting safe and effective work practices.

Support the technical instructor and faculty in the delivery of practical instruction.

Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety within the laboratory workplace.

Assist with equipment preparation, maintenance, and storage.

Participate in laboratory cleanup and preparation for subsequent instructional activities.

Perform related duties as required to support program objectives.

Qualifications

OPC Registered Prosthetic Technician ( RTP ) or OPC Registered Prosthetic Orthotic Technician ( RTPO ) preferred, or equivalent prosthetic technical training and experience.

Demonstrated proficiency in prosthetic fabrication techniques, including plaster work, thermoplastic fabrication, component assembly, and finishing procedures.





Strong commitment to laboratory safety and best practices.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.

Demonstrated ability to organize work and adapt to changing instructional needs.

Demonstrated ability to support, mentor, and instruct learners in a laboratory environment.

Previous teaching, mentoring, or instructional experience is considered an asset.

Salary Range
Salary Range Salary Range: $72,334 - $98,815 per annum.

Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
