About the role Pinterest is on the lookout for an Engineering Manager to oversee the API team based in Toronto. This position is crucial for ensuring the infrastructure that supports our Android, iOS, and Web applications is both secure and scalable, providing a robust environment for our internal product developers to thrive.

What you'll do Design and implement solutions that cater to the internal development needs by working closely with various stakeholders across the organization.
Offer technical guidance and leadership for both immediate feature development and long-term strategic initiatives.
Collaborate with senior management to establish project priorities, assess scope, and monitor progress throughout the execution phase.
Uphold high standards of software quality by engaging in pair programming, conducting thorough code reviews, and participating in hands-on prototyping sessions.
Provide mentorship to engineers at different levels to foster their professional development and enhance team capabilities.
Enhance the readiness of first-party client APIs for production use, ensuring they meet performance and reliability standards.
Play a key role in expanding the team by actively participating in the recruitment process to attract new engineering talent within your first year.
Drive initiatives that promote best practices in software development and operational excellence within the team.
Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among team members and other departments to ensure alignment on project goals.
Analyze and address technical challenges that arise during the development process, providing innovative solutions to overcome them.
Regularly assess team performance and implement strategies for continuous improvement.
Foster a culture of inclusivity and innovation within the engineering team, encouraging creative problem-solving and experimentation.
Requirements At least 1 year of experience in a managerial role within an engineering context.
A minimum of 4 years of direct experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on hands-on development.
Demonstrated success in delivering high-quality software in environments that utilize automated build and deployment processes.
Experience in leading engineering teams through significant product launches or major feature rollouts.
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in the industry.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically under pressure.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure and services, particularly in relation to API management.
Experience with Agile methodologies and practices, including Scrum or Kanban.
Knowledge of performance optimization techniques for APIs and web applications.
Previous involvement in cross-functional projects that required collaboration with product management and design teams.
Understanding of security best practices in API development and deployment.
Skills & tools Proficiency in backend web application development, with a focus on creating scalable and efficient systems.
Expertise in distributed systems engineering, ensuring reliability and performance across various platforms.
Strong background in API development and maintenance, with a focus on usability and developer experience.
Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, or Go, and frameworks relevant to backend development.
Experience with version control systems, particularly Git, and CI/CD tools to streamline development workflows.
Practical notes Please note that this position does not provide relocation assistance for candidates outside of the specified location.
The role adheres to the PinFlex model, which requires in-office collaboration 1-2 times every six months, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.
