Research Scientist II - Toxicology at AbCellera.
About the role AbCellera is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Research Scientist II to join our Nonclinical Safety team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, planning, and executing toxicology studies to evaluate the safety profile of our drug candidates. You will play a key part in ensuring our products meet regulatory standards and are safe for further development. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of toxicology principles, practical experience with in vitro and in vivo studies, and a strong desire to contribute to innovative biotech research. What you'll do Develop comprehensive plans for in vitro and in vivo toxicology studies, ensuring that study designs meet regulatory guidelines and scientific standards.
Conduct or oversee the execution of these studies, including sample collection, data recording, and analysis, to generate high-quality safety data.
Maintain detailed, accurate, and compliant records of all nonclinical safety data in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
Assist in preparing sections of regulatory submission documents related to toxicology and safety assessments, contributing to the documentation required for product approval processes.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as pharmacology, biology, and regulatory affairs to ensure alignment on project goals and data interpretation.
Stay current with published toxicology data relevant to biologics and large molecules, integrating new knowledge into ongoing safety assessments.
Support the interpretation of toxicology findings, providing insights that inform decision-making regarding candidate progression or modification.
Participate in internal review meetings, audits,
and quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.
Contribute scientific expertise to the development of nonclinical safety strategies and protocols, helping to shape the direction of toxicology programs.
Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to study conduct or data quality, ensuring timely completion of projects.
Communicate study results effectively through reports, presentations, and discussions with internal teams and external partners.
Support the training and mentoring of junior staff or new team members in toxicology methodologies and safety assessment practices.
Represent the nonclinical safety team in cross-departmental meetings, providing toxicology insights and supporting integrated project development.
Ensure all safety studies are conducted in compliance with applicable regulations, including GLP, and adhere to company policies.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for study procedures, data management, and safety assessment processes.
Requirements A PhD in Toxicology or a related biological science is required, with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in an academic or industry setting. Candidates with a Master's degree and 7 or more years of applicable experience will also be considered.
Proven experience in designing and conducting in vitro and/or in vivo toxicology studies, preferably within a biotech or pharmaceutical environment.
Strong knowledge of GLP standards and regulatory requirements for nonclinical safety studies.
Demonstrated ability to analyze scientific data critically and interpret results accurately.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear reports and present findings effectively.
Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating robust interpersonal skills.
Eagerness to learn and develop expertise in the safety assessment of biologics and large molecules.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks efficiently.
Attention to detail and scientific rigor in all aspects of work.
Self‑motivated and proactive, with a problem‑solving mindset.
Nice to have Experience with regulatory submissions and documentation in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting.
Familiarity with safety pharmacology, immunotoxicology, or related safety assessments.
Prior experience working in a fast‑paced, innovative biotech environment.
Knowledge of additional safety assessment tools or methodologies relevant to biologics.
Experience with data analysis software or laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
Skills & tools Expertise in toxicology study design, execution, and data analysis.
Familiarity with GLP compliance and documentation practices.
Ability to interpret complex scientific data and generate comprehensive reports.
Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across teams.
Proficiency in scientific writing and presentation.
Knowledge of safety assessment principles for biologics and large molecules.
Practical notes The salary range for this position is CAD $95,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on your experience and qualifications. Benefits include equity options, an annual performance-based bonus, and a 6% RRSP contribution without matching. You will also receive a CAD $1,500 annual Active Lifestyle Allowance, along with vacation time, health benefits, and opportunities for professional growth.
