This is a dual-class role that combines the responsibilities of a Survey Technical Assistant II with the opportunity to step into a Survey Technologist I position. Depending on operational requirements and construction season workload, you may serve as a Survey Technologist I supervising a field survey crew for approximately six months of the year. When not acting as a Technologist, you will perform a full range of field surveying tasks as a Survey Technical Assistant II. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve results in a respectful, inclusive, and service-minded way.
What will you do? Operate and maintain a variety of modern survey instruments accurately and efficiently
Process survey data by uploading, downloading, and utilizing specialized survey software
Conduct essential field surveys, including topographic and construction surveys, using both GPS and conventional survey equipment
Perform basic survey and grading calculations using specialized software and calculators
Assist crew lead in organizing and coordinating a diverse range of surveys, such as playground construction layout, large-scale landscaping, topographical, and encroachment surveys
Assist in performing specialized surveys including preliminary design surveys, control surveys, and as-built surveys
Consult and collaborate with Survey Technicians, Engineers, Designers, Consultants, and Survey Supervisors to establish and meet project deliverables
Ensure the survey vehicle is properly stocked and all equipment is accounted for and well-maintained daily
Maintain records, including timekeeping reports and digital survey files
Perform other duties as assigned




Qualifications Completion of a two-year diploma in Geomatics Technology or Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution is required
A minimum of three (3) years of proven and relevant surveying experience, specifically operating a total station, GPS, and levels
A thorough and demonstrated understanding of fundamental survey principles and techniques
Proficiency in the basic operation of various survey equipment
Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) and eligibility for a City of Edmonton Driving Permit
Assets Familiarity with MicroSurvey and AutoCAD software
Experience utilizing Google Workspace applications
Skills required for success Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to consult and collaborate effectively
Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills to navigate daily operational challenges
Proven time management skills, with the ability to efficiently and effectively plan and coordinate complex field surveys
The physical ability to perform demanding field activities in various weather and environmental conditions, including long-distance walking (10-15 km), digging with a pick or shovel, and pounding stakes

Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Workplace Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
This position's work schedule alternates seasonally: approximately six months with 40 hours per week during the summer and six months with 33.75 hours per week, including an Earned Day Off (EDO), during the winter

Survey Technical Assistant II Salary Range: 33.75 hours per week: $33.081 - $41.437 (Hourly)
Salary Range: 40 hours per week: $31.256 - to $39.160 (Hourly)
Survey Technologist I Salary Range: 33.75 hours per week: $41.437 - $52.085 (Hourly)
Salary Range: 40 hours per week: $39.160 - to $49.221 (Hourly)
