Description The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology, at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is looking for an Epilepsy Clinician to help support the Ottawa Hospital Adult Epilepsy Program (ottawaepilepsyprogram.ca) for a 1-year locum position.

The Division of Neurology is renowned for the delivery of outstanding care and is recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, MS, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy, and stroke.

Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills.

Their work includes cutting-edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology.

In addition to contemporary outpatient clinical units, the Division has a 4 bed EMU, 20 bed inpatient general neurology unit, 15 bed stroke inpatient unit, and consult services at both campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital is a -bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside).

The hospital provides approximately 67, inpatient admissions, , emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding.

Responsibilities The successful candidate will work in outpatient environments under the general direction of the Head, Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa.

Outpatient clinics are supported by 2 nurses.

Inpatient care includes a 4 bed EMU.

The Ottawa Hospital is a regional epilepsy surgical center.

Epilepsy surgeries are performed at an NAEC level IV equivalent, including temporal lobectomies, callosotomies, VNS implantations and DBS implantations.

The EEG laboratory has 4 cEEG machines used primarily in critical care, 4 routine video EEG machines and the ability to perform ambulatory home video EEG monitoring for outpatients.

The program includes outpatient clinics in general epilepsy as well as specialized care in the First Seizure Clinic, Women with Epilepsy and a Transitional Clinic for pediatric patients graduating from the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

The individual will assist in coverage of clinical outpatient epilepsy activities including; 1) evaluation and management of epilepsy patients in subspecialty clinics such as first seizure clinics and general epilepsy clinics.





The proficiency for weekday routine EEG coverage, is also desired.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will be a fellowship trained in epilepsy/EEG with experience in routine outpatient electroencephalography and management of epilepsy in the outpatient and inpatient settings and must hold added subspecialty certification in Epilepsy and/or Clinical Neurophysiology.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, expected to be a diplomate of the CSCN (EEG) and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.

The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa.

Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidates qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Job Benefits The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
