Job Summary

The Disposal Operations Management Trainee (DOMT) is part of a required developmental training program lasting up to 18 months. The position will be located in Carp, Ontario. Under the direction of Frontline Managers – such as Area Directors of Disposal Operations, Landfill District Managers, and Operations Managers – the trainee will work with a Landfill District Manager or Area Director as a primary mentor to master the day‑to‑day operations of a WM landfill.

Responsibilities include safety, environmental protection, permitting, finance, personnel management, heavy equipment, community relations, construction, gas and leachate management, and waste‑stream sales.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Successfully complete the Disposal OMT curriculum (Foundational, Intermediate, Advanced) and all required learning through the WM Learning Management System.
- Attend and participate in all mandatory group training sessions.
- Develop a progressive understanding of day‑to‑day landfill management, including fill sequencing, cover operations, waste placement, compaction, equipment deployment, storm‑water and traffic flow.
- Gain working knowledge of heavy equipment operation and in‑shop maintenance.
- Manage site personnel effectively, including non‑exempt operators, through experiential training.
- Understand landfill design and construction (cell excavation, earthwork, liners, slopes, geosynthetics, leachate control, gas control, final cover).
- Master leachate and landfill gas management and renewable‑energy links to gas systems.
- Build community‑relations skills through public affairs participation.




- Comprehend environmental monitoring and protection, including regulatory interactions and site permits.
- Understand financial, accounting, and forecasting processes, and report to senior management.
- Learn waste‑stream sales and pricing within the WM Sales & Marketing organization.
- Commit to the WM Safety Program, collaborating with Corporate and local safety teams.
- Participate in landfill operational reviews and provide constructive feedback.
- Participate in Area mentor programs.
- Perform additional duties such as special projects and interim management assignments.

Qualifications

- Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or equivalent in lieu of a degree.
- High School Diploma or GED (accredited) plus 4 years of relevant work experience.
- 5 years of work experience with increasing responsibility in construction, engineering, geology, operations management, or heavy equipment.
- Preferred Qualifications
- PE (Professional Engineer) certificate.
- RLS (Registered Land Surveyor) certificate.
- PG (Professional Geologist) certificate.

Pay

Base salary range: $84,480 – $123,844.
