Duties

Permanent seasonal position in Melfort, Saskatchewan:

- Prepare, plant, maintain and harvest cereal and oilseed test plots in field and greenhouse research trials.
- The work requires the operation and transportation of a variety of field equipment including: 50 -100 HP tractors, mowers, cultivators, grain cleaners, and small plot seeders and combines.
- Agronomic data such as heights, yield, test weight, thousand kernel counts and disease ratings are collected with the use of computer technology.
- Grain samples are collected, processed and shipped to various research institutions in Western Canada.

Term position in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:
- Assisting with land preparation for research trials.
- Assisting with preparation and maintenance of equipment.
- Operation of tractors and agricultural equipment such as mowers, seeders and sprayers.
- Assisting with seeding, spraying and harvest operations.
- Assisting with transportation of equipment between locations.
- Assisting with collecting plant and soil samples for analysis.
- Assisting with field maintenance.
- Roadway, grounds and tree maintenance.
- Assisting with irrigation.
- Assisting with asset disposal.
- Record keeping.
- Additional duties can be assigned by the supervisor to meet the needs of the Research farm operations.

Intent of the process The immediate need is to staff two (2) positions:

- One full-time permanent seasonal position located in Melfort, Saskatchewan. Seasons are approximately from April 1st until mid-December each year.
- One full time temporary position in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, for an anticipated duration of two (2) years.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures. In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, they may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

- Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
- Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
- Ability and willingness to perform physical demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labor requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 20kg).
- Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
- Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
- Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory, greenhouse, and field environment.

Education

- Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.At a later stage in the selection process, you will be required to provide documentation verifying your educational credentials.If you were educated outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas assessed against Canadian education standards.

Experience:
- Experience operating agricultural/farm equipment.
- Experience working with crops.
- Experience in cleaning, adjusting and making minor repairs to a variety of tools and equipment.




- Experience collecting basic field notes and input into MS Excel or other spreadsheet applications.
- Experience performing greenhouse operations, including preparing soil, seeding, planting, propagation, fertilizing, and harvesting.

- Knowledge of crop production.

Abilities:
- Ability to identify major grain crop species.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to follow instructions.
