Job Overview

Associates join BDC’s StrongNorth fund as early specialists in investment finance, leading key parts of the investment process and managing the current portfolio. They lead investment analysis workstreams, support networking activities, and monitor a portfolio that shapes the future of the Canadian economy. Focus areas include defense, dual‑use, and deep‑technology sectors aligned with sovereign capability priorities.

Responsibilities

- Lead one or several simultaneous investment analysis workstreams.
- Support team in networking activities and maintain industry engagement.
- Monitor a portfolio of investments, assessing markets, industries, ecosystems, competition, financials, management and product offerings.
- Provide financial analysis for quarterly and semi‑annual reports.
- Maintain deal‑pipeline and build financial models and forecasts.
- Ensure deal‑research files, business plans, investment proofs and other documentation comply with BDC policies.
- Conduct due diligence covering market, competition, management, sales, products, cap table and business value exit strategies.
- Draft investment memos focusing on financials and market sections.
- Support partners during presentations to the Investment Board.
- Engage with entrepreneurs, investors,



and industry representatives at events and maintain relationships.
- Scout emerging markets, verticals, technologies or companies to inform investment strategy.
- Assist with initial business plan reviews, interview memoranda and recommendations for pursuit or decline.
- Provide reference calls with competitors, clients, industry experts and prospective company employees.
- Maintain information resources and subject‑matter expertise in relevant industries and markets.
- Monitor portfolio performance against forecasts and models; communicate opportunities and issues to management.
- Occasionally participate in investee board meetings as an observer and communicate developments to Partners.

Qualifications

- Undergraduate or graduate training in engineering, applied science, or technical STEM domains.
- Robust financial acumen via experience in venture capital, private equity, startup investing or transaction analysis.
- Progress toward or completion of CFA designation or equivalent capital markets training.
- Exposure to defense, aerospace, national security or government innovation ecosystems.
- Experience evaluating investments through venture capital, startups, incubators, accelerators or innovation programs (deep‑tech or defense related).
- Ability to operate at the intersection of technology, finance and policy,



translating complex systems into actionable decisions.
- 3–5 years of experience requiring structured thinking, financial analysis and technical expertise.

Preferred Background

- Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment banking, accounting firm.
- Operator roles: technology startup, leading corporation, industry specialist.
- Advisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Technology or related STEM fields.
- Post‑graduate degree or certification (MBA, STEM Master’s, PhD, CFA).

Technical Knowledge

- Proficiency in Excel, building financial models with sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling.
- Strong analytical thinking and communication skills.
- Working proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to craft clear, concise investment memos.
- Asset: coding, chemistry, electronics, or other wide‑application technology skills.
- Asset: operational knowledge of technical industries.
