We are a mid-sized company based out of our Calgary Head Office and look for individuals to join our team who share our passion for integrity, innovation, and the production of safe, reliable Canadian energy. Surge is currently accepting applications for the position of Drilling Engineer.

Position

Summary The Drilling Engineer plays a key role in planning and executing drilling programs across our core operating areas. This position is responsible for wellbore design, cost management, and technical support through the full drilling lifecycle. Working closely with internal teams and service providers, the role focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective wells while supporting ongoing performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities: Planning & Engineering

Develop and refine wellbore designs, including casing programs, directional plans, and drilling strategies

Perform surface casing depth calculations and pressure/fracture analysis (AB/SK)

Prepare and maintain drilling programs, stick diagrams, and well schematics

Conduct offset well reviews to support design optimization and risk reduction Execution & Coordination

Work collaboratively with operations, technical teams, and service providers to deliver executable well programs

Coordinate vendor inputs across drilling, fluids, cementing, and directional services

Provide technical support during operations, including troubleshooting and support on higher-risk or problem wells

Ensure programs are aligned, practical, and ready for field execution Cost & Performance

Prepare cost estimates and support AFE development and budget planning

Monitor well costs and identify key drivers of performance and variance





Support bid evaluation and vendor selection activities

Complete end-of-well reviews, including cost summaries and performance recaps Continuous Improvement

Review drilling performance and identify opportunities for optimization and cost reduction

Track KPIs and contribute to performance benchmarking and standards development

Capture and apply lessons learned across drilling programs

Maintain and improve internal tools, datasets, and engineering processes Qualifications

8 years of progressive experience in drilling engineering and operations, including in-house experience with an E&P; producer

Experience working in the Canadian oil and gas industry, with exposure to operations in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB)

Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or APEGS

Strong understanding of wellbore design, drilling execution, and cost drivers

Experience working with cross-functional teams and field operations

Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with robust analytical and communication skills
