The Engineering Manager leads, grows and manages a team of engineers building software for new or improved features in Xero's products and its associated service delivery systems. Serving as a leader of individual contributors and technical leads, you act as a coach and advisor to your direct reports, cultivating a high-performance environment by providing guidance, building talent and aligning everyone with Xero's strategic objectives. You champion processes and practices that enable engineers to get excellent work done safely, while supporting and growing the next generation of technical talent.

By fostering a culture of continuous empathy towards customers, you ensure your team delivers better quality software faster to make a measurable impact on the overall product vision. Your focus remains on keeping the team unblocked and accelerated in their adoption of modern engineering practices while consistently meeting service level objectives and security standards. You embrace and push for new technology and processes, such as artificial intelligence, to drive efficiency and stay at the forefront of engineering excellence.

You will lead the Bills team, a large team based in Toronto that owns the core Accounts Payable product area for Xero. The team operates with a highly collaborative, cross‑functional approach, partnering closely with design and product disciplines to carve out future roadmaps and solve real customer problems. Managing the technical vision, operational health and product delivery for all of Accounts Payable using a tech stack built on .NET core and React.

Mentoring

Junior and Senior engineers in their careers and performance development. Building out automated and prediction workflows with the help of artificial intelligence to supercharge small business efficiency. Fostering a positive team culture, driving AI adoption, and encouraging active contribution to internal engineering Communities of Practice.





This role is based in Toronto and is mainly remote, offering flexible working arrangements. To connect and collaborate, the team has a designated in‑office boost day every week, usually coming into the office on Thursdays, along with regular social meetups and connections every quarter. You bring proven experience managing software development teams and a track record of building a healthy, inclusive team culture.

A thorough understanding of modern software development practices, agile delivery, system architecture and incident management is part of your toolkit. Your collaborative approach allows you to work seamlessly with product, design and cross‑functional stakeholders to plan, roadmap and proactively solve complex engineering problems. Possessing strong communication skills helps you navigate conflict openly, ensuring you can comfortably push back when necessary to shield your team from competing priorities.

The expected base salary range for this role is $175000 - $203000 CAD.
