Role Description The Mineral Collections Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in Ottawa, ON, responsible for the stewardship, organization, and growth of the museum’s mineral collections. This role oversees the cataloguing, documentation, and preservation of mineral specimens, ensuring that collection data is accurate, accessible, and aligned with institutional standards.

The Mineral Collections

Manager collaborates closely with scientists, conservators, educators, and exhibition teams to support research projects, loans, and the development of gallery and travelling exhibits. Daily responsibilities include supervising collection care procedures, coordinating acquisitions and deaccessions, responding to internal and external collection inquiries, and contributing to public engagement initiatives that highlight the mineral collections. The role may also involve training and guiding staff, students,



and volunteers in best practices for collection management and handling.

Qualifications

- Demonstrated expertise in mineralogy, geology, or earth sciences, with experience working with natural history or museum collections.
- Strong collection management skills, including cataloguing, documentation, database use, and adherence to professional standards for curation and preservation.
- Experience in specimen handling and conservation practices, including environmental monitoring, safe storage, and risk mitigation for mineral collections.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, support research activities, and coordinate loans and exhibition requirements.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, procedures, interpretive content, and responding to inquiries from diverse audiences.
- Organizational and project management abilities, including prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and overseeing workflows for staff, students, or volunteers.
- Proficiency with digital tools and collection management software; familiarity with GIS, imaging, or data standards in natural history collections is an asset.
- Relevant post-secondary degree in geology, mineralogy, museum studies, or a related field; advanced studies or equivalent skilled experience are considered an asset.
