Role Description The PLC Programmer is a full-time hybrid role based in Ontario, Canada, with some flexibility to work from home. This role is responsible for designing, programming, testing, and commissioning PLC-based control systems for industrial automation projects.
Day-to-day tasks include creating control logic and HMI interfaces, troubleshooting and optimizing existing systems, and collaborating with project managers, engineers, and clients to refine requirements and deliver reliable solutions. The PLC Programmer will participate in on-site installations, support startups, train client personnel, and provide ongoing technical support throughout the lifecycle of the equipment.
Documentation of code, preparation of technical reports, and adherence to safety and industry standards are key aspects of the position.
Qualifications
- Strong PLC programming skills (e.g., ladder logic, function block, structured text) and experience with major PLC platforms (such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
- Experience with HMI/SCADA configuration, control panel design concepts, and integration of sensors, drives, and other field devices.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet, Modbus), networking basics, and system integration best practices.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs;, and technical drawings, with solid troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage project tasks, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and clients in a hybrid work environment.
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulations related to industrial automation and machine control.
- Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Prior experience in one or more of Cherkam’s key industries (e.g., automotive, manufacturing, warehouse and distribution) is an asset.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites within Ontario and occasionally beyond, as project needs require.
