About Accrually
Accrually is a growing Canadian digital bookkeeping company helping founders and small-business owners maintain accurate, organized, and decision-ready financial records.
We combine experienced bookkeeping support with cloud-based tools such as QuickBooks Online and Dext to streamline financial workflows, maintain clean books, and provide clients with clear monthly reporting.
As an early-stage company, we are also developing the systems, procedures, and quality standards that will support a larger national client base and bookkeeping team.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced, client-focused bookkeeper who can do more than process transactions.
In this role, you will meet with prospective and existing clients, assess their books and bookkeeping requirements, identify issues or cleanup needs, and help determine the appropriate Accrually service plan. You will also oversee ongoing bookkeeping work, prepare accurate monthly reports, and help clients understand what their numbers are telling them.
Because Accrually is a startup, you will also have the opportunity to help us establish practical processes, procedures, checklists, and quality-control standards as we grow.
This role is well suited to an experienced bookkeeper who enjoys solving problems, untangling complicated books, working directly with business owners, and building better systems.
Hours and Work Structure
This is an on-demand, client-driven position. There is no fixed weekly schedule or guaranteed minimum number of hours during the initial stage.
Early work will include paid prospect consultations, file assessments, onboarding activities, client delivery, and process development. Ongoing hours will increase as new clients join Accrually and the recurring client portfolio grows.
All authorized work—including meeting preparation, prospect consultations, file reviews, follow-up recommendations, onboarding, training, and client delivery—is paid hourly, regardless of whether a prospect ultimately becomes a client.
Some daytime availability will be required for prospect and client meetings. Bookkeeping and administrative work can generally be completed on a flexible remote schedule, subject to client deadlines.
What You’ll Do
Client assessment and onboarding
- Meet with prospective and new clients to understand their business, current bookkeeping systems, reporting needs, and financial-record challenges.
- Review existing books and identify errors, missing information,
reconciliation issues, cleanup requirements, and potential compliance concerns.
- Assess transaction volume, operational complexity, accounts receivable and payable requirements, GST/HST needs, payroll coordination, project tracking, and reporting expectations.
- Determine the most appropriate Accrually service plan and identify any onboarding, catch-up, or cleanup work that should be scoped separately.
- Clearly explain recommendations, next steps, timelines, and client responsibilities.
- Help set up, transition, or improve client workflows in QuickBooks Online and Dext.
- Ensure new clients have an organized and positive onboarding experience.
Bookkeeping and reporting
- Complete or review full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of small-business clients.
- Maintain accurate general ledgers and properly categorized transactions.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and other balance-sheet accounts.
- Support accounts payable and accounts receivable tracking.
- Complete month-end close procedures and review files for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare monthly Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, and other management reports appropriate to each client’s service plan.
- Meet with clients to review their reports, explain results in plain language, answer bookkeeping questions, and identify matters requiring further attention.
- Support GST/HST tracking and filing readiness, payroll-related reconciliations, and year-end packages for external accountants.
- Complete or coordinate catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping when required.
- Recognize questions or issues that should be escalated to a CPA, tax advisor, or Accrually leadership.
Process development and quality control
- Help develop Accrually’s client-assessment framework and service-plan selection criteria.
- Create and improve onboarding, cleanup, month-end close, reporting, and client-communication procedures.
- Develop checklists, templates, file-documentation standards, and quality-control processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and better use of cloud-based technology.
- Help establish procedures that can eventually be used to train and support additional bookkeeping team members.
- Maintain complete documentation and protect the confidentiality and security of client information.
What We’re Looking For
- At least five years of Canadian full-cycle bookkeeping experience.
- Experience independently managing bookkeeping for multiple businesses or clients.
- Solid knowledge of bookkeeping principles, reconciliations, accruals, financial reporting, and month-end close procedures.
- Experience reviewing, diagnosing, and cleaning up incomplete or inaccurate books.
- Confidence communicating directly with business owners and explaining financial information in understandable language.
- Sound judgment when assessing client needs, determining scope,
and identifying issues requiring escalation.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- The ability to manage competing client priorities and deadlines.
- A high level of accuracy, accountability, discretion, and attention to detail.
- Comfort working independently in a remote and evolving startup environment.
- Availability for occasional prospect and client meetings during regular Canadian business hours.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada.
- Reliable internet access and a private, secure workspace suitable for handling confidential financial information.
Technology Experience Experience with QuickBooks Online and Dext is an asset, but it is not an absolute requirement for an otherwise qualified and experienced bookkeeper.
The successful candidate must be comfortable learning and working with cloud-based bookkeeping systems. Paid platform and process training will be available.
Experience with payroll platforms, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or other bookkeeping automation tools would also be beneficial.
Additional Assets The following would be beneficial but are not mandatory:
- QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification.
- CPB Canada certification or formal bookkeeping or accounting education.
- Experience working in an outsourced bookkeeping practice, accounting firm, or other multi-client environment.
- Experience supporting startups, consultants, e-commerce companies, project-based businesses, or grant-funded organizations.
- Experience documenting procedures, conducting quality reviews, or training junior bookkeepers.
A CPA designation is not required for this position. Why Join Accrually?
- Work remotely with a flexible, growing Canadian company.
- Play a meaningful role in shaping how Accrually delivers its services.
- Work directly with entrepreneurs and small-business owners.
- Help build the systems and procedures that will support a larger bookkeeping team.
- Receive paid training on Accrually’s service plans, technology, and internal processes.
- Grow your hours alongside a developing recurring client portfolio.
- Have the opportunity to transition into a regular part-time and potentially full-time role as the company scales.
