The Organization

Canadian Religious Stewardship (CRS) Mission is to serve the needs of Religious Institutes in Canada through a ministry of collaboration, in particular, their needs relating to eldercare and stewardship of resources in the midst of diminishment.

CRS is a national not-for-profit charitable civil corporation and a Public Juridic Person of Pontifical Right. We serve the needs of our clients ( Sisters, brothers and missionary priests) through a ministry of collaboration; empower them to view their future with hope in the midst of fewer members and diminishing resources; and provide governance, management and administrative expertise and many other services including health care.

Job Summary The Senior Human Resources (HR) Officer is responsible for the day-to-day operational leadership and coordination of the Human Resources function while supporting the Director of Human Resources. As the primary operational HR resource, this position serves as the first point of contact for routine HR matters, providing guidance and support to employees, managers and organizational leaders across the organization.

The Senior HR Officer supervises the HR Officers and Payroll Officer, oversees recruitment, onboarding, payroll administration, employee relations, compliance and HR operations, and independently resolves routine HR matters while escalating complex, sensitive or high-risk issues to the Director of Human Resources.

Working as a trusted operational partner, the Senior HR Officer helps ensure efficient HR service delivery across multiple locations, allowing the Director to focus on strategic leadership, governance and complex organizational matters.

This position reports directly to the Director of Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities

Operational HR Leadership & Coordination

- Serve as a senior operational Human Resources resource responsible for managing and supporting day-to-day HR activities across the organization.
- Serve as the primary operational HR resource for employees, managers and roles reporting to the Director of Human Resources.
- Provide timely and practical guidance on HR policies, procedures, employment practices and employee matters.
- Independently manage a broad range of HR activities, including employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, HR administration and compliance requirements.
- Coordinate HR-related communication, workflow and follow-up across departments, leadership and geographically distributed teams.
- Manage and prioritize daily HR operational activities to ensure timely and consistent service delivery.
- Resolve routine HR matters independently within established policies and guidelines, escalating complex, sensitive or high-risk issues appropriately.
- Ensure consistent application of HR policies, procedures and practices across the organization.
- Identify operational HR issues, risks and emerging trends and communicate significant matters to the Director of Human Resources.




- Maintain strong working relationships with leaders and employees while supporting a collaborative and service-oriented HR function.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Human Resources.

HR Operations & Team Leadership

- Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance and coaching to the HR Officers and Payroll Officer.
- Supervise, assign, prioritize and monitor the work of the HR Officers and Payroll Officer to ensure operational needs are met and deadlines are achieved.
- Conduct probationary and annual performance reviews, provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback, and support employee development.
- Identify training and development needs for the HR team.
- Coordinate and prioritize HR team workload to ensure operational needs are met and deadlines are achieved.
- Review work for quality, accuracy and consistency.
- Step in to perform HR operational activities as required to ensure continuity of service.
- Ensure HR tasks are completed accurately, consistently and within required timelines.
- Develop, implement and maintain standardized HR processes, templates and tools.
- Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, workflows and operational efficiency.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of HR systems and technology.

Recruitment, Onboarding and Offboarding

- Coordinate full-cycle recruitment activities, including preparing job descriptions, posting vacancies, screening candidates, coordinating interviews, conducting reference checks, and preparing employment offers.
- Oversee onboarding processes including documentation, payroll setup, HRIS access and orientation coordination.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of new hire documentation and employment records.
- Coordinate offboarding processes including documentation, exit administration and system updates.

Payroll Support

- Provide operational support to the Payroll Officer.
- Coordinate and communicate HR information affecting payroll, including recent hires, compensation changes, leaves of absence, employee status changes and terminations, ensuring information is complete and submitted within required timelines.
- Respond to routine payroll-related inquiries.
- Support payroll compliance and record accuracy.

Employee Relations & HR Guidance

- Respond to routine employee and manager HR inquiries.
- Provide guidance and support to employees and managers regarding workplace matters, policies and HR processes.
- Support resolution of operational HR matters within policy guidelines.
- Escalate complex employee relations matters, investigations and risk-related issues to the Director of Human Resources.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all employee matters.

Policy, Compliance & HR Administration

- Support consistent application of HR policies and procedures.
- Maintain HR documentation including contracts, policies and employee records.
- Monitor compliance requirements including training and certifications.
- Maintain accurate HR systems and records.




- Monitor legislative updates and flag operational impacts to the Director.

Employee Engagement & Performance Support

- Track performance review timelines and completion.
- Support training, development and certification tracking.
- Maintain HR templates, forms and digital resources.
- Support employee engagement initiatives as required.

Decision-Making and Escalation

- Exercise sound judgment when addressing operational HR matters.
- Make day-to-day operational decisions regarding workload distribution, scheduling and supervision of the HR team.
- Escalate complex, sensitive or high-risk employee relations, legal, or organizational issues to the Director of Human Resources.
- Provide the Director with relevant context, analysis and recommendations to support informed decision-making.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Strong knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practices.
- Strong HR operational knowledge and ability to apply policies consistently across multiple locations.
- Exceptional organizational and coordination skills.
- Strong communication, judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple independent stakeholders in a complex environment.
- Working knowledge of payroll processes and payroll-related compliance.
- Experience with HRIS systems such as HUMI and ADP.
- High level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated reliability, accountability and ownership, with the ability to manage priorities and consistently deliver results.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and escalate appropriately.
- Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.

Requirements

- University degree or college diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field.
- Minimum five years of progressive Human Resources experience in a hands-on HR generalist or operational HR role, with responsibility for employee relations, recruitment, HR administration and advising leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain consistent availability, manage competing priorities and provide dependable operational support.
- CHRP designation required; CHRL considered an asset.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation or equivalent payroll experience strongly preferred.
- Experience coordinating HR operations across multiple sites or stakeholder groups.
- Experience supporting payroll processes and ensuring HR documentation and records are maintained accurately.

Location This position is based in the Greater Toronto Area. While primarily remote, the Senior Human Resources Officer is required to attend on-site at Presentation Manor for Seniors in Scarborough, Ontario on an occasional basis to support operational needs such as interviews, onboarding, meetings, and other HR-related activities as required.

Pay: $87,000.00-$107,000.00 per year
