About Northern NutrientsNorthern Nutrients is a leading manufacturer of enhanced nitrogen sulphur fertilizers, committed to bringing cutting-edge solutions to the agriculture market. Our flagship product, Arctic S, delivers a high percentage (75%) of micronized elemental sulphur combined with nitrogen as urea. We also market several other specialty fertilizer and plant health products developed and manufactured in-house. With a planned expansion to triple capacity of our Saskatoon manufacturing facility in 2026 and continued demand for our sulphur-based fertilizers, the need for skilled quality control and research personnel is essential to assure smooth startup of our new plant and production of high-quality fertilizer products.Role OverviewThe Quality Control and Research and Development Manager is responsible for leading the quality control program at Northern Nutrients’ fertilizer production plant and for managing/conducting research projects. The candidate will leverage their background in chemistry to solve a wide range of problems related to fertilizer quality and performance. The ideal candidate will be resourceful, alert to opportunities, and enjoy working independently.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesConducts routine quality control testing of fertilizer products and organizes/analyzes the results. Works daily with plant operators to address quality issues in a timely manner.Prepares and executes own workplans to address research questions pertaining to optimal plant process conditions, optimal product storage and handling, and fertilizer performance (e.G. nutrient availability,
evaluation of additives).Supervises junior personnel to assist in accomplishing QC and R&D targets.Leads investigations into product quality complaints from customers. Works with the operations team to determine the root cause of the issue and identify areas for product improvement.Identifies opportunities for innovation in the fertilizer industry. Works with the sales and marketing and plant operation teams to build the next generation of products.Manages and nurtures relationships with scientists in academia, government, or external consulting roles. Identifies current opportunities for collaboration with third parties.Works with the Chief Financial Officer to identify sources of external research funding. Prepares grant proposals and fulfills reporting requirements for funding agencies.QualificationsBsc in Chemistry or a related field. An advanced research degree (Msc, PhD), is preferred.Significant experience conducting independent research projects. Industry work experience in product development for agriculture or a related field is preferred.Previous experience in quality control and/or data management is an asset.Valid class 5 driver’s licence.Eligible to work in Canada.SalaryThe estimated salary range is 75,000 to 105,000 CAD per annum.BenefitsGroup RRSP, extended health and dental benefits, health spending account, bonus.Employment TermThis is a temporary term position (maternity leave) to be filled ASAP.
