Toronto

About IonQ IonQ, Inc. is the world’s leading quantum platform and merchant supplier, delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. Ironically, IonQ’s newest generation of quantum computers, the IonQ Tempo, is helping partners including Amazon Web Services and AstraZeneca achieve extraordinary performance results and accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. IonQ is headquartered in College Park, Maryland, with operations in the United States, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Staff Scientist – Fault‑Tolerant Quantum Algorithms We are looking for a hands‑on expert in fault‑tolerant algorithms to lead the technical development of highly differentiated quantum solutions that deliver real value. The role will involve creating next‑generation quantum applications, developing algorithms, IP, resource models, roadmaps, and workflows, and representing IonQ at high‑visibility technical conferences.

Responsibilities Lead hands‑on development of novel fault‑tolerant quantum algorithms that make a large scientific and commercial impact across diverse industry verticals.

Perform detailed resource analyses of quantum algorithms and conduct SWOT analyses of FTQC approaches compared to NISQ and/or classical methods.

Provide trusted expertise in FTQC algorithms and communicate the current state‑of‑the‑art, scaling behaviors, trade‑offs, and cross‑over points to stakeholders across the company.

Drive constructive technical interactions across multi‑disciplinary teams to identify, define, and solve challenging real‑world problems using IonQ’s trapped‑ion quantum computers.

Develop and drive adoption of industry‑leading benchmarking and resource estimation methodologies, metrics, and tools.

Develop a portfolio of foundational IP and high‑impact‑factor peer‑reviewed publications; represent IonQ externally with customers and at conferences.

You’ll be a good fit with PhD in physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience plus at least 3years of professional experience in the quantum computing field.

Demonstrated expertise in FTQC algorithms that scale to millions of qubits, billions of gates, and a tangible progression toward end‑customer value: an active portfolio of invited talks, repositories, licenses, publications, and/or patents.

Active participation in the FTQC algorithm community via development of tools (libraries, simulators, compilers), metrics (costing, resource estimation, ROI), and community initiatives.

Relentless dedication to optimizing algorithmic performance (accuracy, time‑to‑solution) through elegant theoretical equations and engineering optimization.

Mastery of key mathematical techniques used in quantum computing and quantum algorithm development, and a demonstrated ability to communicate scientific results clearly.

You’ll be a great fit with 5+years of professional experience building end‑to‑end solutions for realistic industry problems such as computer‑aided engineering, cybersecurity, chemistry, etc.

Experience working with quantum algorithms for relevant use cases, including quantum simulation, primitive algorithms, and detailed fault‑tolerant applications.

Demonstrated expertise in Python and Qiskit or similar quantum SDKs, with working knowledge of C++.

Experience proposing, winning, and executing consultative contracts; government or defense contracting is a plus.

Experience commercializing end‑to‑end software utilizing hybrid computing (CPU + GPU + QPU, Edge, Cloud) and familiarity with CI/CD, a plus.

Location Remote in the U.S. or onsite/hybrid from College Park, MD; Bothell, WA; Toronto, Canada; Gothenburg, Sweden.

Compensation Base salary range: $167,808 – $219,704, plus bonus and equity.

Compensation varies with education, qualifications, experience, location, and market data.

Advantages Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans.

401(k) matching.

Unlimited PTO and paid holidays.

Parental/adoption leave.

Legal insurance and home‑technology stipend.
