Following a fire that burned down the existing Skate Change building at the Assiniboia West Community Centre, 1x1 architecture was tasked with designing a new building on the original, remaining foundation. Previous building programming was dedicated exclusively to hockey use and included four traditional dressing rooms and a limited canteen area. Significant design changes were required to remedy code deficiencies and to provide flexibility for a broader range of year-round community functions.

The Community

Centre opted for a new design that revolves around a large common area that can be used for a variety of functions such as fitness classes, community gatherings, or event rentals. During hockey practices or tournaments, sliding partition walls can be extended to create two dedicated dressing rooms with benches. Recent non-gendered washrooms and barrier-free design create a more family-oriented and inclusive workplace.

The original foundation featured an irregular footprint that had to remain. This constraint was translated into several design opportunities that include subtle shifts in program,



building massing and material changes. A simple metal-clad gable roof spans this footprint, creating covered exterior spaces that are perfect for watching practices or games.

A durable composite cladding defines the outermost wall planes, while recessed areas feature thermally modified wood siding that appears to be carved from the overall building volume. Full-height glazing at the primary entrance places a robust focus on the courtyard-like space that is enclosed by the skate change building and the existing community centre.
