Cyient is seeking an experienced Tool Applicator / Tooling Specialist to support aerospace engine manufacturing programs in the Montreal area.
The successful candidate will be responsible for tooling activities supporting aircraft-engine components, including turbines, compressors, and combustion systems. This position will work closely with manufacturing methods agents, numerical-control programmers, special-process specialists, inspection specialists, production teams, planners, and manufacturing engineering teams.
The Tool Applicator will evaluate tooling performance, troubleshoot machining issues, recommend alternative tooling solutions, and provide technical support to ensure production continuity, product quality, and manufacturing efficiency.
This position is ideal for someone with practical experience in aerospace manufacturing, machining, numerical-control programming, manufacturing methods, cutting tools, tool holders, and production support.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling and Production Support
Provide technical support for tooling used across aerospace engine manufacturing programs.
Support tooling applications involving turbine, compressor, and combustion-system components.
Diagnose tooling-performance problems and assist production teams in resolving machining issues.
Investigate premature tool wear, tool breakage, dimensional variation, surface-finish concerns, and other tooling-related conditions.
Recommend and implement alternative tooling solutions to maintain production continuity.
Support operators, planners, methods agents, numerical-control programmers, and manufacturing-support teams.
Provide clear technical guidance regarding the appropriate selection, setup, application, and maintenance of tooling.
Help ensure tooling solutions meet production, quality, safety, and engineering requirements.
Tooling Analysis and Optimization
Review existing tooling applications and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, tool life, and machining efficiency.
Define recommended tooling-use values, tool-life expectations, and recovery or salvage dimensions.
Contribute to the development and optimization of cutting parameters.
Support machinability studies and continuous-improvement activities.
Analyze manufacturing data and tooling performance to identify recurring problems and improvement opportunities.
Recommend adjustments to cutting speeds, feed rates, tool geometry, tool materials, coatings, and machining strategies.
Evaluate tooling alternatives according to cost, performance, availability, quality, and production requirements.
Support initiatives intended to reduce tooling costs, machining time, defects, scrap, and production interruptions.
Nonconformance and Technical Support
Review tooling-related deviations and support the disposition of nonconforming conditions.
Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities involving machining or tooling concerns.
Work with manufacturing engineering, methods, quality, and production teams to determine appropriate technical solutions.
Perform drawing annotations, markups, and technical corrections addressing tooling-related conditions.
Document tooling changes, recommendations, decisions, and corrective actions.
Ensure tooling-related technical information is clear, accurate, and available to the appropriate stakeholders.
Support investigations involving dimensional nonconformance, manufacturing variation, and production interruptions.
Tooling Procurement and Implementation
Initiate procurement requests for new tooling packages.
Define technical requirements for cutting tools, tool holders, inserts, and related tooling components.
Support procurement activities associated with new machine installations and production setups.
Work with suppliers, procurement teams, and technical stakeholders to evaluate tooling options.
Review supplier recommendations, technical specifications, availability, expected tool life, and cost.
Support tooling qualification, testing, and implementation.
Monitor tooling availability and identify potential supply risks that could affect production.
Recommend alternate tooling when preferred products are unavailable or unsuitable.
Ensure tooling purchases align with manufacturing and engineering requirements.
Required Qualifications
Three to five years of relevant experience in tooling, machining, manufacturing methods, numerical-control programming, aerospace manufacturing, or a related discipline.
College diploma or university degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aerospace Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
Equivalent practical manufacturing and tooling experience may be considered.
Demonstrated experience supporting machining and manufacturing operations.
Practical knowledge of cutting tools, tool holders, machining processes, and tooling applications.
Experience troubleshooting tooling-performance and machining problems.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation, and technical requirements.
Understanding of cutting parameters, machinability, tool wear, tool life, and production constraints.
Strong analytical and technical problem-solving capabilities.
Ability to work collaboratively with production, engineering, quality, and planning teams.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple production priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Professional proficiency in French.
Ability to communicate effectively in English with global and cross-functional teams.
Canadian citizenship or permanent residency is mandatory.
Ability to work on-site in the Montreal area.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in aerospace-engine or aerospace-component manufacturing.
Experience working with turbines, compressors, combustion systems, or similar precision-machined components.
Experience as a Tool Applicator, Tooling Specialist, Manufacturing Methods Agent,
Manufacturing Engineering Technologist, CNC Programmer, or NC Programmer.
Experience with numerical-control programming.
Experience supporting CNC machining processes.
Experience selecting cutting tools, inserts, holders, fixtures, and machining strategies.
Basic knowledge of CATIA V5.
Experience supporting nonconformance investigations and corrective actions.
Familiarity with precision machining, dimensional requirements, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and inspection processes.
Experience supporting new-part introduction or new-machine implementation.
Experience working with tooling vendors and procurement teams.
Knowledge of continuous-improvement or Lean manufacturing practices.
Experience working in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.
