Join our Infrastructure Maintenance team and help keep Edmonton moving! As a Labourer II, you’ll work as part of a supportive team delivering essential road maintenance and paving services that directly benefit our community.

Are you a hands-on worker who takes pride in building and maintaining our city's roads and pathways? As a Labourer II with Infrastructure Maintenance, you will play a key role in keeping Edmonton's roadways smooth and safe year-round. In the summer months, you’ll work alongside a dedicated crew, you will perform semi-skilled manual work, operate equipment such as rollers and light trucks, and work with hot paving materials. In the winter months, your skills will shift to support critical snow and ice management tasks. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in an active outdoor environment and take safety seriously. What will you do?

Assist asphalt crews with the placement of cold mix, hot mix, hot tar, and mastic materials

Perform heavy manual work using hand and power tools (e.g., jackhammers, tampers, rakes, shovels, and ice chippers)

Remove snow and ice from a variety of inventory using varying hand tools and equipment including but not limited to John Deere 1500 series tractors, Toolcats and MTs

Secure operation and daily maintenance of specialized equipment, including 2-ton trucks, trailers, and 2-to-3-ton rollers

Set up traffic control, signage, and site safety measures as directed by field leadership

Perform Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRA), participate in safety inspections, and maintain a high standard of workplace safety

Complete simple work records such as Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspections and resource order forms

Interact positively and professionally with residents and members of the public when approached on site

Other duties as required including redeployment to encampments, horticulture,



sanitation or other areas

Qualifications

Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade

One (1) year of experience in roadway maintenance work and safe operation methods and daily maintenance practices for equipment

2-ton truck and trailer trained and passed, 2 and 3-ton roller trained and passed

Skills required for success:

Prior experience in roadway maintenance, paving, or asphalt work

Experience pulling trailers or operating rollers/heavy equipment

Experience in snow clearing using hand tools and small to medium equipment

Competency in equipment operation and ability to train employees on various equipment uses and functions

Adhere to standard operating procedures and essential safety measures

Ability to interpret work assignments, read work orders, and fill out digital records or task cards accurately

Strong adaptability to handle shifting priorities, evolving daily work plans, and occasional equipment downtime

Strong safety focus with the ability to identify hazards and follow Standard Operating Procedures

Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions

Strong independent decision-making skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities

Exemplary customer service skills when interacting with the public

Basic computer skills (google applications, data entry, email)

Conditions of Employment:

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position





Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position

Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls

Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Workplace:

The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains

The work occurs primarily in an outdoor setting

Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, hot asphalt, inclement weather, dust, poor air quality, noise, light variation, traffic, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur

Potential exposure to occupational hazards such as biohazards (bodily fluids, needles), chemicals, and aggressive domestic or wild animals

This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 100 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet/hand control, requiring physical stamina and resilience

This role requires 24/7 availability

Salary Range: $25.935 - $34.208 (Hourly); $54,152.28 - $71,426.30 (Annually)
