The Earthworks Foreman/Operator is responsible for supervising and operating heavy equipment on earthmoving and excavation projects. This role combines hands-on operation of machinery with the leadership duties required to manage crews, ensure safety compliance, and deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate daily earthworks operations, including excavation, grading, trenching, and backfilling.
Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, skid steers, and loaders with precision and efficiency.
Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes to ensure accurate execution of project specifications.
Assign tasks to laborers and equipment operators and ensure crew productivity and quality of work.
Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with project specs, safety standards, and client expectations.
Monitor and enforce site safety,
including equipment maintenance checks and hazard assessments.
Communicate daily with site superintendent, project managers, and subcontractors to coordinate logistics.
Train and mentor crew members in proper techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures.
Maintain accurate records of daily activities, equipment hours, and materials used.
Qualifications
35 years of experience in earthworks or civil construction, with 1+ years in a leadership or foreman role
Solid knowledge of civil construction techniques and equipment
Ability to read and understand construction drawings
Effective communication and leadership skills
Valid drivers license and reliable transportation
Safety certifications (CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid) are an asset
