Role Description This is a short-term 1-2 months contract role for an experienced industrial automation designer (PLC/HMI/Electrical), based on-site in Halifax, NS. The role involves designing, programming, and commissioning PLC and HMI systems for a filament extrusion process, including suggestion and integration of sensors, drives, and safety circuits. The designer will create electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams, and support component selection to meet functional, safety, and cost requirements. Day-to-day work includes collaborating with mechanical and product design team, testing and debugging control systems, documenting designs and configurations, and implementing improvements based on prototype performance. The role also requires hands-on support during desing, build, installation, and start-up of automation equipment, ensuring reliable and secure operation in an R&D; and pilot production environment.

Qualifications

- Candidates should possess strong Industrial Design and Product Design skills for equipment and system layouts in an industrial environment.




- Candidates should possess hands-on Prototyping and Product Development skills to iterate quickly on automation concepts and hardware builds.
- Candidates should possess Design Thinking capabilities to translate process requirements into practical, scalable automation solutions.
- Relevant experience in PLC programming (e.g., ladder logic, structured text) and HMI design, including commissioning and troubleshooting.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical design, including panel design, wiring standards, safety circuits, and applicable codes.
- Experience integrating sensors, actuators, VFDs, and motion control in manufacturing or process equipment.
- Ability to read and produce detailed technical documentation and schematics using CAD or electrical design tools.
- Background in automation for manufacturing, process control, or plastics/extrusion systems is an asset.
- Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Comfort working on-site in a prototype lab/industrial environment, with a strong focus on safety and collaboration.

Pay: $3,000.00-$3,500.00 per month
