Head Baker or Bakery Manager

Sweet Meadows Farm & Market — Mill Bay, Vancouver Island, BC

Full-time | $23–$30 per hour, depending on experience and responsibilities

Sweet Meadows is a family-run farm and market located in beautiful Mill Bay on southern Vancouver Island. We are seeking an experienced, hands-on baker to join our farm kitchen and help lead the bakery through its next stage of growth.

Depending on the successful candidate’s experience, this position may be structured as either a Head Baker or Bakery Manager role. We are looking for someone who takes pride in creating fresh, wholesome, farm-inspired baked goods and foods—and who understands the importance of timing, consistency, efficient production, and responsible cost management.

Our bakery produces breads, pastries, pies, loaves, bars, cookies, sandwiches, and seasonal specialties for our busy market and café. Our goal is to offer fresh, appealing products each morning and throughout the day.

Key Responsibilities

· Lead and participate directly in daily bakery and kitchen production

· Prepare breads, pastries, pies, loaves, cookies, bars, sandwiches, and related products

· Organize production so key products are fresh and available at the market each morning

· Develop practical daily and weekly production schedules

· Adjust production quantities according to sales, seasonality, freshness, and customer demand

· Maintain excellent standards for product quality, consistency, presentation, and food safety

· Train, support, and coordinate a small bakery team of one to two employees

· Establish efficient workflows and ensure the appropriate use of labour

· Monitor ingredient usage, yields, waste, shrink, and production costs

· Assist with recipe costing, ordering, inventory control, and pricing

· Maintain a clean, organized, and professional kitchen

· Communicate openly and work collaboratively with the owners and market team

· Help develop seasonal products and strengthen the bakery’s overall offering





The Ideal Candidate

· Has professional baking experience in a bakery, restaurant, café, or similar production environment

· Is a skilled, hands-on baker who is comfortable working alongside the team

· Has experience leading a small team or coordinating bakery or kitchen production

· Understands bakery costing, yields, labour efficiency, inventory management, and waste control

· Can balance creativity and quality with the practical needs of a sustainable business

· Is organized, dependable, honest, and accountable

· Can plan production around freshness, delivery times, and customer demand

· Is comfortable working early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required

· Communicates respectfully and contributes to a positive, cooperative workplace

· Has FOODSAFE certification or is willing to obtain it

· Red Seal certification or formal baking training is an asset but is not required
