We are seeking an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse (RN) to join our growing surgical team. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside leading ophthalmologists in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive perioperative nursing care throughout the patient's surgical journey, including pre-operative assessment, intraoperative circulating and procedural support, post-anesthesia recovery, patient education, and discharge planning.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with ophthalmologists, anesthesia providers, Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), ophthalmic technicians, and administrative staff to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, patient-centred surgical care.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-operative Nursing Care

- Complete comprehensive nursing assessments and pre-operative evaluations.
- Verify patient identity, informed consent, surgical procedure, and operative site.
- Review medical history, allergies, medications, laboratory results, and pre-operative documentation.
- Prepare patients physically and emotionally for surgery while providing reassurance and education.
- Initiate and monitor IV access when required.
- Administer medications as ordered.
- Ensure compliance with surgical safety protocols and pre-operative checklists.

Intraoperative Nursing Care

- Function as the circulating nurse during ophthalmic surgical procedures.
- Maintain a safe, sterile, and efficient operating room environment.




- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team throughout procedures.
- Assist with patient positioning and pressure injury prevention.
- Monitor patient status during procedures and promptly communicate concerns.
- Perform surgical counts according to established policies.
- Accurately document intraoperative nursing care.
- Participate in emergency response and patient stabilization when required.

Post-Anesthesia Recovery (PACU)

- Assess and monitor patients during recovery following surgery and procedural sedation.
- Monitor vital signs, pain levels, level of consciousness, and overall recovery.
- Identify and respond appropriately to post-operative complications.
- Administer medications as prescribed.
- Provide discharge teaching regarding medications, activity restrictions, eye protection, follow-up appointments, and warning signs requiring medical attention.
- Ensure discharge criteria are met before patient release.

Clinical Quality & Patient Safety

- Maintain compliance with CPSO OHP standards, infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices, and Accreditation Canada principles.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and incident reporting.
- Support medication safety and controlled substance management.
- Assist with emergency preparedness activities, mock codes, and clinical drills.
- Promote a culture of patient safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required

- Current unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
- Current BCLS (CPR) certification.
- Minimum 3 years of recent nursing experience in OR.




- Excellent assessment, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care.

Preferred

- Recent experience in ophthalmology, ambulatory surgery, operating room, day surgery, or PACU.
- Perioperative nursing experience.
- IV therapy and venipuncture experience.
- Moderate sedation monitoring experience.
- ACLS certification (considered an asset).
- CNA Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CPN(C)) considered an asset.

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Day shifts: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Compensation:

- At Ajax Ophthalmology Associate Surgery Centre, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package and is determined within a range of $ 30 - $ 35 / per hour. Our pay ranges are based on the local cost of labor benchmarks for each specific role, level, and geographic location.
