Social Development Worker

Skwlāx te Secwépemcúlecw (SteS) is traditionally known as Skwlāx, which translates to Black Bear in Secwépemctsín, the traditional language. SteS has a unique vision and drive; the Band has not only led the way in tourism within the Shuswap, but it has also led the way in economic development. The creation of Quaaout Lodge, Talking Rock Golf, Le7ka Spa, and Little Shuswap Gas Station has helped promote Secwepemc culture, and allowed the SteS people to develop world class accommodation and leisure activities.

The governance structure of SteS is unique and forward-looking, divided into four sectors:

Administration

Covering programs and services for Band members

Wellness

Responsible for the overall health and wellness of the community

Territorial Stewardship

Addresses title and rights issues and external government-government relations

Economic Development

Oversees the business operations of the community and works to promote a strong, resilient economy for the community. Strong management and leadership with clear vision and an excellent team of committed employees make up the engine that drives the community forward

Employment Type Full Time, Permanent, M-F 8 am to 3 pm

WAGE $27.50 to $31.50 per hour depending on experience education

Experience Social Development Diploma and 5 years experience

Job Summary:

The Social Development Worker is responsible for the planning, development, delivery and administration of the Skwlāx te Secwepemcúlecw Social Development Program.

Basic Qualifications | Requirements for position:

- Social Development Diploma with 5 years experience, Human services, employment coordinator back ground and/or combination of education and relevant job experience equivalent.
- Current Criminal Record Check - vulnerable sector
- Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in a fast paced,



diverse environment .
- Solid communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong cross-functioning relationships and liaise with diverse stakeholder groups;
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license required.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with SteS Band policies, standards and procedures, and as directed by the Executive Director of Administration Ed of Wellness Child an family manager

In consultation with Health Director, Child and Family manager Band staff and leadership, assist in the development of community resources, capacities, and services

Supervise the Administration of the Income Assistance and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) programs.

Liaise with AANDC ISC as required.

Administer social development programs including Cultural Enrichment, Low Income Family Immediate Needs, Child Care and Support to Parents, Family Violence and Band Member Assistance

Ensure the required reporting to AANDC and other funding agencies is completed and submitted as required

Develop and submit funding proposals in consultation with the Health Director Child and Family

Assist client to seek employment and gain the necessary skills to obtain employment

Develop and maintain confidential program and client files according to professional requirements

Manage the Social Developments budget using Adagio system

Assist community members access provincial and federal programs and services





Assist clients in filling out CPP, OAS, GIS forms. Disability, tax credit forms etc.

Assist clients access Non-Insured Heath Benefits programs and services.

Advise the Health Director Child and family of sensitive and important information.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by the Executive Director of Administration C&F; manager.

Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher

Photocopier and fax

Knowledge and familiarity of Accounting Software

Physical demands

The majority will be performed at a desk/workstation and those normally associated with a typical office environment – sitting for extended periods of time, eye strain, moderate noise from office equipment/foot traffic, working in confined area.

Working conditions of this position is performed in a typical office setting. May be required to work after hours and occasional travel may be expected.
