Primary Function:

Under the direction of the designated service area supervisor, who may or may not be on site, operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Perform maintenance of equipment associated with these facilities. You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and AFNWA’s Occupational Health and Safety Program.

The primary work location for this position is Neqotkuk; however, the successful candidate may be assigned to other AFNWA service areas for temporary short-term operational assignments, as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- Assist with the control of all operational processes and check mechanical equipment, adjusting as required.
- Perform preventative maintenance on all facility mechanical equipment.
- Contribute to routine mechanical maintenance on any equipment that forms part of the water and wastewater system.
- Take samples and conduct routine tests for process control and regulatory compliance.
- Transport and mix chemicals and operate equipment used for unloading chemicals.
- Monitor the SCADA system for process optimization, pressure and flows to determine priority maintenance and operations response.
- Take daily readings and log any irregularities in the process operations. Maintain adequate records as required.
- Maintain a tidy and sanitary appearance of water and wastewater system facilities.
- Participate in on-the-job training as it pertains to both technical aspects of the position as well as safety.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for proper operation of water and wastewater systems.
- Flexibility to travel throughout Atlantic Canada, as required, for operational assistance and career development.
- Must be willing to work overtime for emergency callouts.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

- Grade 12 [GED] is required.




- Completion of a two-year technical program related to Water and/or Wastewater Treatment is considered a strong asset. An equivalent combination of related formal education and experience in a water or wastewater treatment setting may be considered.
- Must successfully obtain Operator-in-Training certification within twelve months of date of hire with the expectation to achieve over time, higher levels of certification.
- Must be willing to complete any further training which is available to Operators in relation to water and wastewater systems.

Experience:

- Experience in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems and/or general operations and maintenance of equipment is considered a strong asset
- Experience working with First Nation communities or agencies would be considered an asset
- Fluent in Mi’kmaq or Wolastoqey languages would be considered an asset

Certificates:

- A valid provincial driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
- Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training (Employer provided training): First Aid, WHMIS, Confined Space Entry, Traffic Signing, Excavation & Trenching Safety, Fall Protection, Hoisting & Rigging, Lockout/Tagout

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

- Location: within treatment plants, outdoors and underground in an environment that includes dust, fumes, volatile organic compounds, noise, odor, heat, cold, etc.
- Operate Equipment and tools in difficult conditions (heat, rain, snow, ice, or confined spaces)
- Workload Level: Medium to Heavy.
- May be required to work alone.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week plus overtime, as required

Term: One year term contract

Pay: $53,653.00-$67,065.00 per year
