Job Opening: Justice Facility Dog Handler

Location: New Brunswick (position can be filled from anywhere in New Brunswick)

Position Type: Full-time

The Courage Centre (Beausejour Family Crisis Resource Centre Inc.) is seeking two Justice Facility Dog Handlers to add to their JFDNB team!

Position Summary

The Justice Facility Dog Handler provides trauma-informed support to victims and witnesses involved in the criminal justice system using an accredited Justice Facility Dog. The handler works collaboratively with police, Crown prosecutors, victim services, community agencies, and the courts to reduce anxiety, improve participation in the justice process, and promote victim well-being. The successful candidate is responsible for both the professional delivery of victim support services and the daily care, welfare, training, and handling of the Justice Facility Dog.

Key Responsibilities

· Accompany victims and witnesses throughout the criminal justice process.

· Assess client suitability for Justice Facility Dog support.

· Prepare victims for court and provide emotional support during interviews, meetings, and testimony.

· Handle the Justice Facility Dog safely and professionally in accordance with organizational policies.

· Maintain the dog’s physical health, grooming, exercise, and ongoing training.

· Coordinate appointments and court attendance involving the facility dog.

· Educate justice partners and community organizations about the Justice Facility Dog Program.

· Maintain confidential client records and statistical reports.

· Participate in multidisciplinary case planning with justice and community partners.

· Ensure compliance with all policies governing accredited assistance dogs and justice facility dogs.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in social work, psychology, criminology, social sciences, or a related discipline.

· Experience supporting victims of crime, particularly survivors of gender-based or intimate partner violence would be considered an asset.





· Training in trauma-informed and victim-centred practice.

· Ability to work with individuals experiencing trauma and crisis.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

· Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and willingness to travel throughout Recent Brunswick.

· 24 hour a day, 7 days a week care for a justice facility dog

· Ability to transport, care for, and provide a home for a working dog outside regular business hours.

· Successful Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience working within the criminal justice system.

· Knowledge of court processes and victim support services in New Brunswick.

· Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

· Travel throughout the province.

· Occasional evening or weekend work.

· Responsibility for the care and well-being of the Justice Facility Dog both during and outside regular work hours.

· Exposure to traumatic and emotionally sensitive situations.
