The Bachelor of Education program in the School of Education (Faculty of Education & Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach one section of the Fall 2026 portion only of EDSM 4200: STEM Specialty – a multi-term course delivered in fall 2026 and winter 2027.

EDSM 4200 (STEM Specialty [Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics]):
This course builds on EDSM 3100. Approaches for supporting senior secondary students’ engagement and learning in a science specialty (biology, chemistry, physics) or a mathematics specialty are explored. Teacher candidates extend their application of pedagogical approaches and strategies consistent with constructivist philosophy and the nature of science or math for the senior secondary student. Teacher candidates design lesson and unit plans that build inquiry skills; promote critical and creative thinking; connect with authentic science, math and technology contexts; and, are consistent with British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum. The course prepares teacher candidates for the second two-week practicum (EDTE 3420) and the long practicum (EDTE 3430, 3440, 3450)



where they teach in their specialty area.

QUALIFICATIONS

- A Bachelor of Education is required
- A Master of Education is required; A PhD/EdD is strongly preferred
- Recent experience as a K-12 teacher strongly preferred and three years full time classroom experience is required
- Advanced and current knowledge of the subject area is required
- Experience and excellent understanding of child development and how this relates to elementary or secondary schools is required
- Previous successful post-secondary school teaching experience is preferred
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills is required
- Proven skills in building intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect are required
- Demonstrated experience in integrating Aboriginal knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required
- Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required
- Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA10), is required
