Position Overview:

As a Dental Sedation Registered Nurse with Huron Dental Group, you play a critical role in ensuring the safe delivery of sedation and anesthesia services within the dental setting. Working collaboratively with dentists, anesthesiologists, oral surgeons, and clinical teams, you are responsible for patient assessment, monitoring, recovery care, and compliance with regulatory standards.

This position requires advanced clinical judgment, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations. The Dental Sedation Registered Nurse supports patient safety throughout the entire sedation process, from pre-operative preparation through post-operative recovery, while ensuring adherence to all regulatory and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Assessment & Pre-Procedure Responsibilities

- Greet patients warmly and provide a welcoming first impression.
- Review patient medical histories, medications, allergies, and consent forms.
- Verify that all pre-operative instructions have been followed, including fasting requirements and medication protocols.
- Obtain, assess, and document baseline vital signs.
- Prepare patients for sedation and surgical procedures.
- Conduct pre-procedure nursing assessments and identify any concerns requiring escalation.
- Ensure emergency medications, monitoring equipment, and resuscitation equipment are available, stocked, and functioning properly.
- Confirm all required documentation is complete prior to the procedure.
- Collaborate with the anesthesiologist and dental team regarding patient readiness.

Sedation & Intra-Procedure Monitoring

- Assist the anesthesiologist with patient preparation and positioning.
- Set up anesthesia and monitoring equipment.
- Continuously monitor and document:
- Blood Pressure
- Heart Rate
- Oxygen Saturation
- Respiratory Rate
- Electrocardiogram (ECG), where applicable
- Level of Consciousness
- Assist with IV access and administration of medications as directed by the anesthesiologist.
- Maintain accurate and complete sedation and anesthesia records.
- Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition.




- Assist in the management of medical emergencies and adverse events.
- Support the clinical team in maintaining a safe and efficient treatment environment.

Post-Procedure & Recovery Care

- Monitor patients in the recovery area following sedation or anesthesia.
- Assess and document airway, breathing, circulation, pain levels, and level of consciousness.
- Administer medications as prescribed or directed.
- Evaluate patient readiness for discharge using established discharge criteria.
- Document recovery progress and discharge assessments.
- Provide post-operative instructions and patient education to patients and caregivers.
- Escalate concerns, complications, or unexpected findings to the anesthesiologist or attending provider.
- Ensure continuity of care through accurate documentation and communication.

Compliance & Program Management

- Audit sedation records for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure emergency medications are properly stocked and within expiry dates.
- Monitor and maintain crash carts, oxygen systems, suction equipment, and emergency response supplies.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and review of sedation-related policies and procedures.
- Participate in quality assurance and risk management initiatives.
- Support staff education, training, and mock emergency drills.
- Assist with incident investigations and corrective action planning where required.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable standards, including RCDSO Sedation and General Anesthesia Standards, CNO Practice Standards, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and clinic policies.

Administrative & Operational Responsibilities

- Maintain accurate patient records and nursing documentation.
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist with inventory management of sedation-related supplies and medications.
- Report equipment concerns and coordinate servicing when required.
- Support scheduling and coordination of sedation appointments as required.
- Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and mandatory training.

Qualifications:

- Current registration in valuable standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Registered Nurse (RN) designation required.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
- Experience in procedural sedation, anesthesia, emergency nursing, critical care, PACU, or operating room nursing preferred.
- Knowledge of sedation monitoring equipment and emergency response protocols.
- Strong assessment, communication,



and documentation skills.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
- Knowledge of RCDSO Sedation and General Anesthesia Standards.

Work Conditions:

- Clinical environment involving direct patient care and monitoring.
- Exposure to medical emergencies and urgent patient situations.
- Standing, walking, and assisting with patient transfers throughout the workday.
- Travel may be required between company locations.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- Must be fully permitted to live and work in Canada.
