Job Overview

The Municipal District of St. Stephen is seeking a Utility Operator to join our Public Works team.
This is a full-time union position governed by the CUPE Local 770 Collective Agreement.

Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure – Public Works, the successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and repair of the Municipality's drinking water source, distribution, and treatment systems. This includes wells, reservoirs, pumping stations, water mains, chlorination and treatment systems, meters, buildings, and related infrastructure.

This position plays an essential role in protecting public health by ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of drinking water to our community.

Responsibilities

- Operate, monitor, and maintain the municipal drinking water system.
- Monitor pumps, gauges, meters, and control systems.
- Collect water samples and perform routine laboratory testing.
- Maintain operational records, logs, and regulatory documentation.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Inspect pumping stations, reservoirs, transmission systems, and related infrastructure.
- Carry out water main flushing and other preventative maintenance activities.
- Maintain buildings, grounds, and facilities associated with the water system.
- Coordinate maintenance activities and oversee contractors as required.
- Respond to after-hours callouts, emergencies, and overtime as required.
- Follow all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.

QualificationsRequired

- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Related training as required by the Province of New Brunswick and/or the Municipal District of St. Stephen.




- Class II Water Distribution (WD) Certification, or Class I Water Distribution (WD) Certification with the demonstrated ability to obtain Class II certification as soon as reasonably practical.
- Experience operating, maintaining, and repairing drinking water treatment and distribution systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the Municipality.

Preferred

- Knowledge of drinking water treatment and distribution systems, pumps, motors, control systems, and related equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical plans, maps, and construction drawings.
- Strong record-keeping, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
- Valid New Brunswick Class 3 driver's licence with Air Brake Endorsement (E) is considered an asset.

Pay: From $31.75 per hour
