The Opportunity:
The role provides the effective assessment, treatment and transportation of patients to/from medical and/or
other facilities throughout the District of Muskoka. The Paramedic is required to act in the capacity of either
driver of the ambulance or attendant to the patient.

What you will do:
• Patient care

- Transport and transfer of patient
- Equipment and station maintenance
- Documentation management
- Liaise with dispatch centres, base hospital staff, police, fire, and family members

What you will need:
• Completion of a Community College program in Paramedicine

- Certified as a Primary Care Paramedic in Ontario (AEMCA)
- Requirements and qualifications as prescribed in the Ontario Ambulance Act Reg 257/00
- Proven knowledge of basic life-support medical care methods, procedures, techniques, and specifications

related to Ambulance service, Base Hospital, equipment supplies, use of meds, vehicles and base stations

- Working knowledge of the Ambulance Act and other related legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Hold a valid class F drivers licence (or proven equivalent) with no more than six (6) demerit points

accumulated during the year immediately prior to the date of employment

- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening that is within 60 days of hire
- Ability to physically provide patient care and transport
- Preference may be given to applicants who are currently certified with a Regional Base Hospital

JOB DESCRIPTION

Primary Care Paramedic

Department: Paramedic Services Reports to: Platoon Superintendent, Paramedic Services

SUMMARY
Provides the effective assessment, treatment and transportation of patients to/ from medical and/ or other facilities
throughout the District of Muskoka. The Paramedic is required to act in the capacity of either driver of the
ambulance or attendant to the patient.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):

- Patient Care:

o Perform emergency medical care duties in accordance with Basic Life Support Patient Care Standards and Base

Hospital protocols,



which may include:
 Completing patient assessments, including assessing the scene for hazards;
 Initiating treatment including administering medications and continued monitoring and reassessment;
 Conducting cardiac defibrillation, CPR, oxygen, manual ventilation, IV treatment, bandaging, etc.;
 Coordinating with other primary care or medical service providers on the best approach for patient care.

- Transport and transfer of patient:

o Safely transport patients and other passengers, in both emergency medical care and non-priority situations;
o Transfer patients to and from vehicles, treatment centres, examining tables, stretchers, beds, etc.

- Vehicle, Equipment & Station Maintenance and Driving:

o Inspect response vehicles for roadworthiness, inventory and serviceability and advise dispatch of availability;
o Clean and restock interior of response vehicles and equipment, including stretchers and linens, as required;
o Ensure safety and cleanliness of ambulance station(s);
o Report any deficiencies in station premises, vehicles and equipment to the appropriate parties.

- Documentation:

o Document and record nature of injuries and patient care provided;
o Complete reports and paperwork necessary to document the particulars of the call/ shift, including the ACR

(Ambulance Call Report) per the Ontario Ambulance Documentation Standards– Patient & Patient Care
Documentation;

o Complete and sign all required controlled substances documentation, as required.

- Communications

o Maintain communication with dispatch and attain direct links with Base Hospitals, as required;
o Liaise with dispatch centres, base hospital staff, police, fire, and family members to ensure relevant information

is collected and proper treatment is administered;

- Participate in all mandatory training in compliance with base hospital and MOHLTC requirements.
- Adhere to all related regulations and standards as set out in legislation and District policies and procedures
- Promote a positive working environment through professional conduct with patients, patient families, coworkers,

members of the public and other emergency service or agency providers

- Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

- Completion of a 2 year Community College program in Emergency Health Care/ Para-medicine (EMCA)
- Certified as a Primary Care Paramedic in the Province of Ontario
- Meets all Ambulance Act and Ontario Regulation 257 requirements for employment
- Valid CPR, Restricted Radio Operator’s license and all qualification that meet legislated requirements
- Proven knowledge of basic life support medical care methods, procedures and techniques, and specifications related to

Ambulance service, Base Hospital, equipment supplies, use of medications, vehicles and base stations

- Working knowledge of the Ambulance Act and other related legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Class F driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract and clear Vulnerable Sector and Criminal record check report
- Ability to physically provide patient care and transport
- This role entails shift work and will be required to work evenings and weekends on a 24/7/365 rotational schedule
