Job Summary
- Installation of emergency equipment (warning lights, sirens, etc.) on to police cars and similar vehicles (SUVs, sedans, pickup trucks)
- Installation of associated equipment such as push-bumpers, prisoner seats, storage drawers, roof-top antennas, etc.
- Installation of electrical wiring and related components
- Removal of equipment from vehicles that are to be decommissioned
- Rigorous testing of all installed equipment
Job Type / Category Sigma Safety Corp. is one of BC's largest emergency vehicle outfitters. We sell and install all the gear that turns a regular vehicle into a police car, fire chief's truck, bylaw enforcement vehicle, etc. This includes lights & sirens, pushbumpers, prisoner containment systems, storage drawers, computer mounting systems, 2-way radios, and all the electrical components needed to make everything work.
The successful candidate will have a good understanding of 12 volt electrical systems and will be comfortable modifying vehicles to install equipment (drilling holes in the roof, removing body panels and bumpers, etc.). Most of all the successful candidate will have a very high quality standard and take pride in their work.
The position is 8am-4:30pm Monday to Friday. Installers are expected to bring their own good-quality hand tools (full ratchet set, screwdriver set, power drill/driver, flashlight, etc.) but specialty tools are provided by the company. If you don't have good hand tools we can make arrangements to help you purchase them through payroll deduction, etc.
You'll be working indoors in a brand recent, clean, heated shop, alongside our senior technician and other installers.
In addition to hourly pay, we offer a profit-sharing program to all our staff.
We also pay MSP and extended health once you've successfully completed your 6-month probation period.
Required Education, Skills and Qualifications
As our field is quite unique, we are willing to train the right candidate, provided they are truly willing to learn and take direction from our senior installer, and have high quality standards. If you have the desire to rise to the top of the industry, we'll bend over backwards to help you accomplish that goal.
As this is an "Installer" position, you will not be expected to engineer the systems that you'll be installing (determining what wire gauge to use, where to run wire, what equipment to install, etc.) - that's the job of our Senior Technician. You'll need to understand that job as he lays it out for you, then install equipment per the design.
The position involves;
- good dexterity (ability to work with small wire gauges, small nuts and bolts, etc.)
- ability to see colour accurately (i.e. not colour blind; many of the wires are colour-coded)
- sometimes working in cramped or uncomfortable positions in a car
- frequent lifting of objects of 10-20 lbs, but occasionally up to 70 lbs
- frequent kneeling and bending
Our most desired traits are;
- a positive attitude
- "can-do" rather than "can't do"
- willingness to learn from other techs/installers
- extremely high personal quality standards
- takes pride in a job well done
- gets along well with others
- works well without direct supervision
- works at a pace that allows jobs to be completed within allotted time
- be reliable - show up on time and ready to work
SIGNIFICANT: As we work on police cars, you MUST be able to pass an RCMP Enhanced security clearance. This is a significantly higher level than a standard criminal record check Passing this check is absolutely mandatory condition of employment. If you don't feel that you can easily pass this check, then please don't apply for the position. KEY: You MUST currently be legally permitted to work in Canada. No out-of-country applicants will be accepted due to the security requirements of this position.
