Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager, this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all plant utilities, refrigeration and boiler systems. The Chief Operator ensures compliance with regulatory standards and optimizes the functionality of steam boilers, refrigeration systems, air compressors, ventilation, and other critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities

- Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all plant utilities, including steam boilers, refrigeration, air compressors, hot water heating systems, ensuring compliance with TSSA/ESA standards
- Monitor and maintain the industrial refrigeration equipment, steam boilers, and air compressors
- Ensure proper logbook entries are completed and adherence to regulatory requirements
- Must be available for after hours and emergency calls in relation to the refrigeration and boiler systems
- Able to provide guidance to shift operators
- Maintain current Operating Procedures and continue to develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance systems to maximize equipment reliability and efficiency
- Manage regulatory equipment inspections with service providers to ensure compliance with TSSA
- Work closely with contractors and vendors to ensure all outsourced maintenance and engineering work meets industry standards and safety regulations




- Identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives related to plant operations, utility management, and energy efficiency
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and food manufacturing regulations (e.g., GMP, HACCP, WHMIS, SDS)
- Provide technical expertise and support for capital projects
- Other projects and responsibilities as assigned by management

Requirements

- Refrigeration Class B Certificate or 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate as per TSSA requirements
- Minimum 2-3 years experience with ammonia based refrigeration systems required
- Experience with a CO2 refrigeration system would be an asset.
- Minimum of 2-3 years experience in a related role within the food/beverage or manufacturing industry considered an asset
- Proven expertise in operating and maintaining steam boilers, refrigeration systems, air compressors, and other plant utilities
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work orders and equipment management would be an asset
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to coordinate with cross-functional teams and regulatory bodies
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while ensuring compliance and operational efficiency
