Position Summary:

The Energy/BAS Lead (EBM) will perform energy assessments for St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (Charlton Ave., King St., and W5th St.) premises and build business cases for energy efficiency and sustainability management. This will include the identification, reporting, and implementation of energy-saving opportunities for all three facilities.

The EBM will work with larger commercial, institutional, and industrial electricity, natural gas and water distribution consumers to secure incentives offered by IESO, Alectra, Enbridge and City of Hamilton. The EBM will develop organizational energy management policies required to manage energy consumption efficiently. The EBM will provide energy awareness training to SJHH staff and actively participate in the SJHH Green Team (Sustainability).

The EBM will also serve as SJHH’s authority and representative in coordinating projects related to integrating recent BAS functionality and maintaining and improving existing functionality of existing BAS systems resident within SJHH. This includes integration of new BAS functionality, updating, and modernizing existing functionality to current BAS standards. This individual serves as SJHH representative for Redevelopment projects where changes / additions are required.

The EBM will review, recommend, and work with service providers to ensure and maintain SJHH BAS standards.



This individual will also provide leadership and apply specialized knowledge of the BAS systems at both Charlton and King Street Campuses in maintaining existing functionality. This includes inspection, arranging for calibration of inputs and outputs of all primary equipment devices (boilers, chillers, air handling units, condensing heat recovery system, hydronic systems, compartment and roof top units), and their associated process control variables and process control loops, which ensures the direct digital control system meets standards.

The EBM will also provide education to SJHH Stationary Engineers regarding the operating context of the BAS.

The EBM will assist with Infrastructure replacement projects, recommending energy efficient equipment and systems to further increase energy sustainability. The EBM interface with MoH, preparing submissions, such as interim and final settlement reports, submitting ASPs, ECPs, etc., and recommending infrastructure projects from Schedule A which are aligned with the Capital Replacement Plan (Asset Management), keeps the SLAM Asset Management database updated as part of HIRF, and take on other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering preferred
- CHES (Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society), ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) , or AEE (Association of Energy Engineers) membership preferred -3 to 5 years’ experience preferred, plus 1 year on the job training

Energy Manager:

- AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred or eligibility for certification within 1 year of hire




- Experience implementing or delivering energy conservation and sustainability projects

- Familiarity with energy conservation measures for industrial, commercial, or institutional customers, preference in healthcare settings.
- Proficiency in energy modelling techniques and programs such as RETScreen and eQuest

- Ability to source and secure incentives for energy conservation and sustainability projects
- Proven experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Proficient computer skills including energy related software, spreadsheets and databases

- Demonstrated history of continuous learning

BAS Manager

- Working knowledge of both Siemens and Johnson Controls Building Automation Systems is required

- Excellent mechanical, electrical, process and HVAC troubleshooting skills
- Sound knowledge of ASHRAE and CSA Standards/Codes and recommendation practices
- Thorough knowledge of building automation industry engineering fundamentals and business operations

Other Responsibilities:

- Assist with Infrastructure replacement projects, recommending energy efficient equipment and systems

(The person has to have the capability to apply basic electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics concepts to situations in the hospital and not depend on an answer from Chat GPT or other AI sources.)
